In Saint-André, a long coastline, striking rocky landscapes and a rich cultural heritage come together. Walks along the Batture, hiking trails and climbing routes offer different ways to explore the area. The historic church and a cultural centre also shape the village’s character. You can plan your trip around what matters most to you, whether that’s nature, outdoor activities or culture.

Coast and rocky landscapes

The Batture of Saint-André-de-Kamouraska stretches for 13.5 kilometres along the coast. In Parc de l’Ancien-Quai, interpretive panels provide information about the wildlife and plant life of the Battures, giving you a glimpse of the natural environment along this stretch of coast. If you prefer to get around on foot, the Aboiteau has a walking trail about 6 kilometres long. Its approximate length can help you include the trail in your day’s plans, without implying a particular walking time.

There’s another distinctive landscape to explore west of Saint-André-de-Kamouraska: a chain of rocky monadnocks forms impressive escarpments. They are made of exceptionally hard orthoquartzite. At Cabouron de Saint-André, hiking trails pass through a habitat unique at these latitudes, with a forest area of bonsai jack pines. The coastal scenery and rock formations offer different ways to enjoy time in nature.

Hiking, cycling and climbing

SEBKA has 10 kilometres of hiking trails in two separate areas, connected by the Sentier de la batture. Hikers can choose between the two areas and include the connecting trail in their outing. The Aboiteau, about 6 kilometres long, is a separate walking trail. Together, these different trails offer various ways to spend time outdoors, though they don’t all form a single route.

The Route verte passes through the central part of the village of Saint-André. Cyclists exploring the area can use its route to help them find their way around the village. Climbers will find 125 routes of all difficulty levels in SEBKA’s climbing area. SEBKA also offers introductory climbing courses by reservation, which are accessible to families. This gives families a specific opportunity to enjoy an activity together by including a climbing course in their trip.

Church, culture and quiet places

Construction of the Église de Saint-André-de-Kamouraska began in 1805, and it has undergone no major changes since it was built more than 200 years ago. It is the oldest Catholic place of worship in the Bas-Saint-Laurent and is designated a historic monument. The church also houses five works of art designated as cultural heritage properties. It is part of the Route des Frontières’ cultural and heritage circuit, making it an important landmark for travellers interested in history and cultural heritage.

The Maison culturelle Armand-Vaillancourt is housed in the former village school on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The cultural centre offers a varied programme of exhibitions, performances and cultural activities. Parc de la Madone has a different character: this quiet place dedicated to religious devotion is near a small waterfall and can be reached via Chemin de la Madone, just behind the church. The church, cultural centre and park appeal to different interests, from art and performances to quiet reflection.

Saint-André as a place to stay

The Chemin des Navigateurs is an annual pilgrimage route. Saint-André-de-Kamouraska provides accommodation for hikers, and many pilgrims stop there during the tourism season. This is part of the village’s distinctive character as a destination for travellers on foot. Duvetnor also offers excursions to Île-aux-Lièvres, which is part of the territory of Saint-André-de-Kamouraska.

Saint-André-de-Kamouraska is accessible via Highway 132 and Autoroute 20. When choosing a holiday rental in Saint-André, you can start by considering the experiences you want your stay to focus on: the coast and hiking trails, climbing, cultural heritage or a journey along the pilgrimage route.
