Discover Palmerston
Accommodation in Palmerston
Get to know Palmerston through its railway heritage, the seasonal Minto Farmers’ Market, and a range of ways to explore on foot. Families can choose based on their shared interests: should the focus be on history, a visit to the market, or time on a trail north of town? These highlights give Palmerston a distinct character when looking for a suitable holiday destination.
Railway Heritage in Town
The Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum is home to the only original railway station in Wellington County. The “Old 81” monument also recalls the railway’s history: it represents the era when steam locomotives were housed in Palmerston. Together with the Palmerston Historical Walking Tour, which starts at the museum and leads through town, there are several ways to explore the area’s history.
“Trendy Trains,” an outdoor public art project, offers another perspective on this heritage. Ten artists decorated a steel train sculpture with art and crafts to celebrate Palmerston’s local railway heritage. The “Trendy Trains” are on display downtown from June to October. Art and railway history are therefore seasonal themes to consider when planning your trip.
Market and Seasonal Discoveries
The Minto Farmers’ Market takes place every Saturday from June to September at the Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum. Offerings include locally grown fruit and vegetables, homemade baked goods, meat and cheese, as well as maple syrup, preserves, and spices. Plants and unique handcrafted goods round out the selection. If you’re planning a visit during this period, Saturday is the right day to include the market in your trip. Its varied offerings also make it a destination in its own right for discovering local produce and handcrafted goods.
Walks and Trails
The Palmerston Historical Walking Tour starts at the Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum, 168 William St, Palmerston, and leads through town. Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for the tour. This gives you a clear timeframe if you’d like to combine a walk through Palmerston with another activity. If you’re especially interested in the town’s history, you can make the tour a focus of your visit.
North of Palmerston, the White’s Junction Trail follows the former CN rail line. It includes two wooden trestle bridges. In Palmerston, the trail can be reached via signposted routes on Main Street near the Foodland grocery store. This lets you choose between a tour through town and a trail in the surrounding area, without combining the two experiences into a single walk.
Consider the Season When Planning
The footbridge offers a view of Palmerston’s park, but is closed during the winter months. If this viewpoint matters to your trip, take the season into account. Tours at the Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum can be booked by appointment during the off-season, from September to May; arrange your visit two or three days in advance.
Palmerston is especially worth considering as a holiday rental destination if you’d like to include railway history, a seasonal market, or different walking options in your trip.
