Elora: Gorge, Grand River and Art

At Elora Gorge, the Grand River flows past cliffs up to 22 metres high. Elora also offers trails through the gorge landscape and a diverse arts scene. As you look for a vacation rental, consider whether you want to focus your stay on the river and nature, walks, or art and local history.

Gorge, River and Quarry

Elora Gorge Conservation Area has two kilometres of trails with views of the 22-metre-deep gorge. The Upper Grand Gorge Trail is 2.6 kilometres long, for pedestrians only, and offers views of the Tooth of Time, Lover’s Leap and Elora Gorge. The distances and viewpoints give you different options when planning trails into your day. The Conservation Area also has 450 campsites, but no swimming area.

Elora Quarry has a different landscape: the limestone quarry covers 0.8 hectares and is surrounded by rock walls up to 12 metres high. A one-kilometre loop trail passes through cedar forests and offers occasional views of the Grand River. The quarry has a large beach area with access to the water, as well as a sandy area for children and sunbathers. Shaded picnic areas and a few first-come, first-served tables round out the amenities. If a beach area or picnic spot is important to you, these features clearly distinguish the quarry from the Conservation Area, which has no swimming area.

On Foot Through Elora

The 1.8-kilometre Bissell Loop includes a boardwalk and a paved trail with views of downtown Elora. A self-guided walking tour of Elora takes an estimated 75 minutes. Its first stop is the old Armory Hall; a historic plaque is located beside the entrance. Armory Hall was built in 1865 as a drill hall for training the local militia.

The Elora Art Walk is a self-guided art tour through the village. The area around the route features public and private galleries, outdoor sculpture projects and public artworks. The Elora Sculpture Project is an outdoor art exhibition that runs from May to October in the downtown areas of Elora and Fergus. During the Elora Fergus Studio Tour, artists open their studios in Elora and Fergus over two autumn weekends.

Art, Craft and Local Experiences

The Elora Centre for the Arts is housed in a restored three-storey limestone schoolhouse. Its former classrooms now accommodate gallery spaces, a craft shop, teaching rooms and artists’ studios. Outside, an art trail features installations, benches, picnic tables and bicycle parking. The Schoolhouse Arts Collective brings together more than 20 artists working in different media. Ancient Ways Native Art presents original art, crafts, music, clothing and artefacts of the Algonquin and Iroquois Nations.

Practical arts activities are also part of Elora’s character: Elora Pottery offers private pottery classes, and Blown Away Glass Studio hosts glassblowing workshops. For culinary experiences, The New Grand Food Tour – Elora organizes private group visits to local food and drink destinations, with tastings. When planning your trip, you can weigh whether you’d rather spend your time walking, exploring art and crafts, or discovering local food.

A Longer Trail Nearby

Nearby, the 47-kilometre Elora Cataract Trailway connects the watersheds of the Grand River and Credit River. Separately, the stretch of the Grand River between Fergus and West Montrose, which includes Elora Gorge, is a brown trout fishery. These details offer additional interests to consider when planning your trip, without conflating Elora’s shorter trails with the longer Trailway.
