Coastal Landscapes and Natural Areas
At 9 kilometres long, the beach at Pinery Provincial Park is a distinctive coastal feature of the county. The park is classified as a Natural Environment Park because it has provincially significant landforms, along with related natural, cultural and recreational resources. Those interested in the landscape will find not only a long beach here, but also a designated connection to nature and recreation.
Other natural areas showcase different landscape types. Lambton County Heritage Forest features oak savanna and Carolinian forest. The Ipperwash Dunes & Swales Nature Trail passes through Carolinian forest with sand ridges and wet depressions; boardwalks provide access across the depressions. The Forested Dunes Nature Reserve is part of the Port Franks Dunes & Wetlands Complex. This complex is designated as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest and an Important Birding Area.
Trails for Different Kinds of Exploring
Lambton County Heritage Forest is owned by Lambton County and has three interconnected trails with a combined length of 8 kilometres. The trails pass through the area’s oak savanna and Carolinian forest landscapes. The total length refers to the trail network; it does not describe the length of a single trail.
A 1-kilometre recreational trail runs through oak savanna and dunes at Ausable River Cut Conservation Area. Weather permitting, its multi-use trails can be used on foot, on snowshoes or on cross-country skis. The options available there therefore vary according to conditions and mode of travel. This conservation area also has a StoryWalk.
At Rock Glen Conservation Area, walking trails pass through Carolinian forest and offer views of Rock Glen Falls. The Woodland Heritage Trail, meanwhile, is located at Lambton Heritage Museum: this loop is about one kilometre long and passes through the forest around the main museum and historic buildings. Those looking to combine nature and regional history can take these different trail and museum experiences into account when planning their trip.
Museums and the County’s History
The Oil Museum of Canada is a National Historic Site. It highlights the significance of Lambton County’s contributions to the development of the global petroleum industry. Lambton Heritage Museum is dedicated to the county’s artifacts, culture and local history. The site includes five historic buildings and two exhibition halls; the Lambton Gallery offers a thematic exploration of the region’s history.
The museum’s five buildings include Rokeby School, Cameron Church, Tudhop Home, Beef-ring Slaughterhouse and Ravenswood Blacksmith Shop. Their different names and functions offer concrete historical points of interest during a museum visit. In Arkona, the Arkona Lions Museum and Information Centre houses an extensive collection of Devonian fossils, minerals and artifacts from the surrounding area.
