In Sunbury County, three covered bridges invite you to compare their construction years, spans, and posted load limits. Oromocto offers further points of interest for history, museums, and outdoor activities. When planning, you can choose between bridges and historic sites, trails, and events.

Covered Bridges: Construction Years, Lengths, and Load Limits

The B015 Back Creek No. 2 Covered Bridge near Hoyt Station was built in 1936 and is 28.8 metres long. The R650 Rusagonis River No. 2 Covered Bridge is older: it dates from 1909, has two spans with a total length of 35.2 metres, and is also known as the Owens or Patrick bridge. Near Mill Settlement stands the S590 South Oromocto River No. 2 Covered Bridge. Built in 1912, it measures 41.5 metres, making it the longest of the three.

The posted weight limits are also relevant when planning. The B015 and S590 have limits of 10 tonnes gross vehicle weight and 6 tonnes per axle. The R650 has a posted weight limit of 10 tonnes. If you plan to cross one of the bridges by vehicle, observe the applicable limits.

Oromocto: Fort History and Museums

The original Fort Hughes was built in 1780 and occupied by the Loyalist regiment Royal Fencible Americans until the end of the war. A replica of Fort Hughes, a blockhouse from the American Revolutionary War, stands near the original site on the Oromocto River in Sir Douglas Hazen Park. The fort’s history and its replica form a distinct historic focus in Oromocto.

The New Brunswick Military History Museum presents the history of New Brunswick’s armed forces from 1600 to the present day. Its life-size displays cover the province’s military history. The Canadian Military Engineers Museum is located in the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, in the Mitchell Building at CFB Gagetown in Oromocto. It moved to this location and officially reopened there on July 1, 1998. If a museum visit is part of your firm plans, check current visiting options in advance.

Trails, Cycling, and Water Access

The Deer Park Nature and Trans Canada Trail System in Oromocto is relatively flat overall. It is suitable for walking, jogging, and hiking, as well as non-motorized cycling, roller sports, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The southern route of the Oromocto section of the Trans Canada Trail runs 3.1 kilometres into central Oromocto and to the Hazen Park Trailhead. This gives you separate points of reference—the type of activity and the route described—when planning an active day.

Oromocto’s cycling network includes several kilometres of on-road bike lanes, off-road trails, and sidewalks marked to improve cyclists’ visibility. The Hazen Park Centre/Sir Douglas Hazen Park TCT Water Route Trailhead has a boat, canoe, and kayak launch, as well as restrooms. Second Nature Outdoors in Oromocto, at the mouth of the Oromocto River where it meets the St. John River, offers tours and courses. Which of these options suits your plans depends on whether you would rather include trails on land or activities on the water.

Choose Events and Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests

Oromocto Pioneer Days takes place annually in late June or early July. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates in advance. For arrival information, the Visitor Information Centre in Oromocto is beside exit 303 of the Trans-Canada Highway, which leads east.

When looking for a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what your stay will focus on: will the covered bridges be your main interest, or would you rather spend more time exploring the attractions in Oromocto? Then choose accommodation based on the locations that matter for your plans. If you want to combine several interests, you can factor events and current museum visiting options into your schedule.
