Charlotte County brings together coastal communities along the Bay of Fundy, unusual nature experiences, and a rich regional history. At the St. Andrews Blockhouse, the water level along the coast and in the harbour rises and falls twice daily by an average of 7.24 metres. Gardens, museums, and trails through coastal and bog landscapes round out the experience. When choosing your vacation rental, consider which of these aspects of the county you would most like to experience.

Tides and Coastal Trails

Charlotte County’s coastal communities stretch from St. Stephen and Saint Andrews to the coastal islands along the western shores of the Bay of Fundy. Near Saint Andrews stands the St. Andrews Blockhouse, built by local residents during the War of 1812 to protect the town from American privateers and military forces. Visitors can tour the barracks and gun battery. Pea Point Lighthouse has stood at the eastern entrance to the harbour since 1878, adding another historic landmark to the coast.

Ministers Island is accessible only at low tide and is home to the Van Horne estate. Walking trails and coastal views shape the island’s nature experience; the tidal conditions are important when planning your trip. If you are interested in the interplay between sea and shore, the Fundy Discovery Aquarium offers another fitting perspective: visitors can touch marine animals in large subtidal tanks under supervision. At low tide, the aquarium also provides access to the beach, and animal feedings take place daily.

Discover History and Culture

In St. Stephen, the Chocolate Museum tells the story of local confectionery making and Ganong’s innovations in Canada’s confectionery industry. Visitors can also watch Ganong Hand Dippers make chocolate using a method that has been maintained for more than a hundred years. It offers a connection between regional history and a hands-on look at how chocolate is made.

The Charlotte County Archives preserves records reflecting the experiences of people in the county from the 18th through the 21st century. The Charlotte County Museum shares the history of Charlotte County, New Brunswick, on a partly guided tour; its offerings include free tours and interactive exhibits. The Blacks Harbour Heritage Museum also focuses on regional history, particularly life in a Bay of Fundy fishing village and the sardine industry. The Charlotte County Gaol is another historic landmark: the massive, square building was constructed in 1832 from grey granite blocks, with walls 2.5 feet thick. Its austere prison cells remained in use until 1979.

Gardens, Nature, and Active Excursions

Kingsbrae Garden in Saint Andrews is a 27-acre horticultural and ornamental garden. It is open daily from mid-May through October. At the Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre on the Saint Andrews waterfront, visual arts and crafts are featured alongside natural history and conservation education. The Centre offers galleries, artist studios, a nature room for children, a pottery studio, children’s programs, and nature excursions year-round.

The 350-acre Ganong Nature Park offers views of the confluence of the St. Croix River and St. Croix Island. You can hike, cycle, or snowshoe there; at low tide, you can also explore the tidal beach zone. New River Beach Provincial Park presents a different landscape: trails run along the cliffs of Barnaby Head, while a boardwalk crosses the bog to insect-eating plants and 90-year-old dwarf spruce trees. The park hosts an annual sand sculpture competition.

At Pea Point, the marked trail in the Conners Brothers Nature Preserve near the ferry terminal is about 1.25 km long one way. This specific distance can help you decide how to fit the trail into your own excursion plans. When choosing a vacation rental in Charlotte County, a good first step is to consider which experiences matter most to you: tides and coastal trails, gardens and art, or the history of local communities and regional industries.
