The North Kazakhstan Regional Museum of Local History has exhibitions on two floors with 13 thematic halls. The museum offers themed excursions and conducts educational projects on local history, Kazakh customs and traditions, and regional heritage. It is located in the historic centre of Petropavl in 19th-century architectural monuments that were formerly merchants’ houses.

The North Kazakhstan Regional Museum of Fine Arts in Petropavl was established in 1989 in an early-20th-century wooden building recognised as a national architectural monument. The collection includes painting, sculpture, graphics, decorative and applied art, theatrical and decorative art, icon painting, and religious objects. The museum also displays works by Kazakh artists, including painting, sculpture, decorative and applied art, and children’s art.

History

The Ablai Khan Residence complex comprises Ablai Khan’s house, an office, a guesthouse and a bathhouse. The regional central Kyzylzhar Mosque in Petropavl was opened on 27 November 2005. It has two 42-metre-high minarets and a 32-metre-high dome.

On Petropavl’s main street stands a sculpture of Abai and Pushkin. It consists of figures of the two poets and symbolises the friendship between the two peoples. Services have been held in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul since 1947.

Nature

The Petropavl Botanical Garden is a specially protected natural area. Educational and introductory excursions are held there, and plants are presented to visitors. The garden is located in the northern part of the city on the banks of the Ishim and covers 20 hectares. An admission ticket to the Botanical Garden provides access to the grounds, the greenhouse and the winter garden.
