In Shenggeldy are the remains of a medieval fortified settlement that has been identified as a caravanserai along historic trade routes. Visible surviving features include fortification walls, ruins of corner towers and a defensive moat; excavations were carried out in 2014.

A medieval caravanserai near Shenggeldy dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries and occupied an area measuring 70 by 70 metres. Its surviving fortification walls reach approximately 1.5 to 2 metres in height. The archaeological site of the Shenggeldy caravanserai is located in the centre of Shenggeldy on the right bank of a river of the same name. The archaeological enclosure is square, measures 85 by 85 metres and has corner towers. The caravanserai was rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries, as indicated by remains of fired-clay bricks in its walls.

In medieval Shenggeldy, the place was a trading settlement and a trading post on the Silk Road. In connection with Shenggeldy, a historic route of the Silk Road is described that ran from the Ili–Kapchagay passage through Shenggeldy and onward towards Altyn-Emel and the Koksu Valley. The settlement of Eki Oguz is described as being located on the Ili River; from there, caravans continued on to China.

The rural mosque of Shenggeldy has two minarets and a dome. The 1975 obelisk commemorating the villagers who fell in the Great Patriotic War is a memorial monument in Shenggeldy. A water supply system made of clay pipes was observed next to the settlement. Joldykiz promotes the traditional Kazakh Kimishek headdress in Shenggeldy.

Geographical Location

Shenggeldy is located on the Almaty–Oskemen Highway. Shenggeldy is the turn-off for the route to Post No. 1 of Altyn-Emel National Park, which leads to the Tamgaly Tas petroglyphs and the Beshatyr burial mounds. The Altynemel Visitor Centre is located at Post No. 1 in Shenggeldy.

Near Shenggeldy, Altyn-Emel National Park encompasses the northern shore of the Kapchagay Reservoir and the Ili River.
