Chakvinji: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Chakvinji Fortress in the village of Jikhashkari is associated with Davit Dadiani, the last ruler of Samegrelo: he was born in a small house within the fortress. The fortress is described as easily accessible and as an attraction on the road from Zugdidi to Chkhorotsku.

Geographical Location

The Chakvinji Fortress stands on a high limestone hill on the left bank of the Chanistsqali River and occupies a border area between the villages of Jikhashkari and Chakvinji. In the wider regional surroundings of Ch’akvinji are Razvaliny Kurort Satanazhir, Mt’a Urta, Gora Satandzhio, Gora Zhirtamishka and Gora Gumurishi.

History and Culture

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the fortification was integrated into the domestic estate of the Dadiani dynasty. The Chakvinji Fortress is an architectural and archaeological monument dating from the 5th to the 17th century. Its oldest defensive layers are attributed to the Kingdom of Egrisi, known as Lazica in Byzantine sources.

The Chakvinji Fortress complex comprises a citadel, a tower with a tunnel, a palace and a church. The citadel has an elongated oval ground plan, measures 100 metres in length and up to 30 metres in width. The Chakvinji Fortress has been classified as cultural heritage of national significance.
