Samegrelo and Upper Svaneti: Alpine Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Samegrelo and Upper Svaneti
Alpine landscapes, rivers, and waterfalls meet wetlands, historic sites, and a distinctive food culture in Samegrelo and Upper Svaneti. The region brings together Samegrelo and Zemo Svaneti, two historic and geographic areas with their centers in Zugdidi and Mestia, respectively. When choosing your holiday apartment, an early question can help: should the trip focus mainly on nature and water, museums and history, or several days in the mountains?
Two areas with different highlights
In Zemo Svaneti, alpine nature, clear lakes, the Enguri River and its fast-flowing tributaries, and waterfalls shape the landscape. Upper Svaneti was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996. A special undertaking for active travelers is the hike from Mestia to Ushguli: the route described is about 57 kilometers long and takes four days. These details help you plan the hike as a multi-day focus rather than treating it as a short excursion.
Samegrelo offers different natural and cultural attractions. Kolkheti National Park protects and preserves the Colchic wetlands and lowland forests. Its administration offers boat tours to visitors at two locations, near Poti and Zugdidi. At Martvili Canyon, a natural monument in Samegrelo, a 300- to 350-meter stretch of the Abasha River is open to boat trips. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider whether these nature experiences or the alpine landscape of Zemo Svaneti should shape your itinerary.
Museums, history, and an extraordinary dam
In Zugdidi, the museum housed in the two Dadiani Palaces holds more than 44,475 ancient objects. These include private possessions and a death mask of Napoleon Bonaparte. The botanical garden at the Dadiani Palace was established in 1840 and covers 67 hectares. The museum and garden offer different ways to enjoy a culturally focused stay: the collections and the extensive garden each stand on their own.
Nokalakevi also combines historical insights with a specific place to visit. The museum-reserve invites visitors to walk through ancient history; its oldest preserved objects date from the 8th–7th century BC. The Church of the 40 Holy Martyrs, dating from the 6th century, is also located within the reserve. The Enguri Arch Dam offers a very different experience: it is 271.5 meters high and received the status of industrial heritage of national importance in 2015. Enguri Attraction offers three tours of the facilities: a Walking Tour, a Short Tour, and a Full Tour.
Food culture and trip planning
Svan dishes include kubdari and kupati, seasoned with distinctive Svan salt. If you want to combine regional cuisine with alpine nature, you can include this culinary discovery alongside the landscapes and places of Zemo Svaneti. A road follows the Enguri Valley from the source of the Enguri to the border of Samegrelo. For planning, it is worth choosing your main focus: the four-day hike, the dam tours, and the nature experiences around Kolkheti and Martvili are very different kinds of trips.
