Culture and History

Admission to the Ujarma Museum-Reserve is free. Ujarma’s most important historic buildings were constructed in the 5th century and later rebuilt during the High and Late Middle Ages. The construction of Ujarma is attributed to King Aspagur at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries. In the 4th century, King Mirian made Ujarma a princely fortress city. In the 5th century, King Vakhtang Gorgasali made Ujarma a temporary capital. Dachi completed the fortress city of Ujarma after the works associated with Vakhtang Gorgasali.

The Jvari Patiosani Church has an oldest lower level built onto a tower, while the tower’s entrance remains open.

Landscape and Terrain

Ujarma Fortress is located on the right bank of the Iori near the modern village of Ujarma. The fortress city of Ujarma consists of an inner fortress on a ridge and a lower fortress built on a steep, rocky slope descending towards the river.

The fortress complex offers views over the Iori Valley. An observation of the Caucasian agama is also recorded within the site.

Getting There and Surroundings

The Ujarma Museum-Reserve can be reached by minibus on the Tbilisi–Gombori route. Ujarma Fortress is located about 45 kilometres from Tbilisi on the winding road to the Gombori Pass.

Ujarma also has a balneological resort with medicinal mineral waters containing iodine and bromine.
