Its nature reserves also vary considerably: some invite visitors to follow marked hiking trails and join guided tours, while others offer multi-day routes or protect particularly sensitive natural environments. Cities, monasteries and wineries add a cultural and culinary dimension to your stay.

Experience nature: trails and tours
The protected areas of Vashlovani include a nature reserve, a national park and three natural monuments. The trail network offers one- and two-day tours by car, bicycle and safari vehicle. So if you are planning time for excursions, you will find a range of tour formats here. The route through Artsivi Gorge is described in more detail: it is 7 to 8 kilometres long, takes one day and combines a drive with a walk. The difficulty level is moderate. Viewpoints offer opportunities to spot griffon vultures and other birds of prey; the route also passes the endemic plant Campanula kakhetica.
The protected areas of Lagodekhi offer five marked hiking trails, as well as educational, horse-riding and cultural tours through largely untouched natural landscapes. One longer option is the trail to Black Rock Lake: the horse-riding route is 48 kilometres long, takes three days and has a moderate difficulty level. When choosing between tours like these, it is worth considering the stated duration and activity. Another nature excursion leads to Rocho Waterfall. The forest trail runs along the bank of the Shromiskhevi River; the climb over Mount Ninigori includes occasional steep sections.
Nature conservation and distinctive landscapes
The bird and animal life in Kakheti’s protected areas varies from place to place. Iori Nature Reserve is a wildlife-rich natural corridor through which the Iori River flows. Migratory birds breed there in spring and autumn, while various animal species live there year-round. In Chachuna Nature Reserve, 82 bird species breed, ten of which are on Georgia’s list of endangered species. The strict nature reserve of Batsara protects more than 100 hectares of untouched stands of the endangered European yew. Access is restricted to educational purposes, scientific research and monitoring. This distinction matters when choosing a nature excursion: not every protected area is intended for the same kinds of visits.
The protected areas of Tusheti have eleven routes offering hiking, cycling, horse-riding and cultural tours, as well as birdwatching and observation tours for bezoar goats. An off-road vehicle is required for the journey from Kvemo Alvani to Omalo. Bear this in mind if you are planning a trip to these places.
Wine, cuisine and cultural sites
Kakheti is Georgia’s most important wine-growing region. Telavi is a key stop on the Georgian Wine Route; family-run wineries and larger producers can be visited in the city and surrounding villages. Tsinandali Estate also combines winemaking and culture: the estate includes a winery and a palace whose history is closely connected with the family of Prince Aleksandre Chavchavadze. Large qvevri are among the region’s well-known features; some of these vessels hold 6,000 to 8,000 litres.
Local dishes include mtsvadi, chakapuli and khashlama, as well as churchkhela and tatara made from grape juice. Visitors interested in historic architecture will also find a range of sites: the Gremi complex is a fortified town built on a hill in the 15th century. The Sighnaghi fortress encircles the entire town and is one of the largest fortresses of its kind in Europe and the South Caucasus. In Telavi, the Museum of King Heraclius (Erekle) II is housed in a preserved royal palace that served as a residence in the 17th and 18th centuries. Other cultural sites include the 25-kilometre-long Davitgareji monastic complex and the Niko Pirosmanashvili house museum in Mirzaani; Bodbe Monastery is associated with Saint Nino.
