Coast and Alpine Landscapes
Abkhazia has a warm, humid subtropical climate. Its long coastline is a defining feature of the region; at the same time, a route to Piv Pass starts from Auadhara. The pass lies at an altitude of over 2,000 meters in the alpine meadow zone. Its Abkhaz place name is Tschcha or Antschcho. New Athos Cave
Inside New Athos Cave, a 1.4-kilometer walking path passes several viewpoints. All the halls have artistic lighting and sound. The cave contains hundreds of thousands of crystal formations of more than 100 different types, with a wide variety of shapes and colors. This combination of a clearly defined walking route and diverse formations makes the cave a distinct nature experience. If you are traveling with children, the shapes and colors can be an opportunity to look more closely together and then compare your impressions with other destinations.
The history of the cave railway is also part of New Athos Cave: in 1975, a train carrying tourists traveled for the first time through the artificial tunnel leading to the cave. This is a specific historical detail about the destination’s development for tourism, but it says nothing about the railway’s current operation.
Churches and Historic Buildings
New Athos Monastery was built in several phases between 1877 and 1911 and consists of two parts. The upper complex has a rectangular floor plan, was built from 1884 to 1896, and includes five churches. These details give the monastery a distinct architectural profile: alongside the long period of construction, its division into two parts and the churches in the upper complex shape the description of the building.
Churches from different eras and architectural styles have also been preserved in the Pitsunda area. Pitsunda Cathedral was built at the end of the 10th or beginning of the 11th century on the ruins of an older cathedral. Those interested in historic architecture will find that it has a different historical timeframe from New Athos Monastery. The old lighthouse is also part of Pitsunda’s local character. It is no longer in operation and is considered a landmark of Abkhazia.

At the traditional Likhnashta festival in Likhni, visitors have the opportunity to sample traditional Abkhazian dishes. The festival also adds a culinary dimension to the visit.
