Culture and History

Zufu, also known as Likhni, was the principal residence of the Shervashidze rulers of Abkhazia. Likhni was the capital twice: in the Middle Ages, as the capital of the Kingdom of Abkhazia, and from 1808 to 1864, as the capital of the Principality of Abkhazia. Historically, the place also served as the summer residence of the Abkhazian rulers.

At the edge of the village are the ruins of a Christian basilica dating from the 6th–8th century. The Church of the Dormition in Likhni contains preserved interior wall paintings from the 10th–11th and 14th centuries. The Chachba-Shervashidze Palace was destroyed after the 1866 uprising on the orders of the Russian authorities. The 7th-century Abaanta Fortress is located on the outskirts of Likhni, on the left bank of the Khypsta River.

Likhni was a traditional centre of pan-Abkhaz military democracy, where Abkhazians gathered to decide important matters. The first major public gathering in Likhni took place in 1861. Scholarly research and related conservation work on Likhni Church are currently not possible because it is located in occupied territory.

Nature

Likhni contains two significant caves formed in limestone conglomerates. Underground streams flow through the caves. They contain small stalactites, oolites, pazolites, alluvial material and organic deposits, including guano. The oolites are spherical and distinctly shiny. Pottery shards have also been found in the Likhni caves.

Events

The Lykhnashta meadow is used for public gatherings, festivals and equestrian competitions. Gatherings at Lykhnashta include horse riding, dance and singing performances, as well as competitions in preparing national dishes.

Under Georgia’s Law on Occupied Territories, foreign nationals and stateless persons may enter the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia only from the direction of Zugdidi Municipality. Entering the occupied territories from directions other than those specified by law is prohibited for foreign nationals and stateless persons and is punishable under the Georgian Criminal Code.
