History and Culture

Gulripshi Garden is registered in Gulripshi as an immovable cultural heritage site. Services at the Church of the Prophet Elijah are held in Old Church Slavonic and Abkhaz; hymns are sung in Old Church Slavonic, Greek and Abkhaz.

Nikolai Smetskoi built a sanatorium in Gulripshi in 1902. The historic Gulripshi Sanatorium was described as having period features such as electric power, running water, a dining lounge, laundry facilities, an elevator, a post office and a telegraph office. In the early 20th century, the sanatorium operated to treat tuberculosis. It was described as the first sanatorium on the Caucasus Black Sea coast and could accommodate rehabilitation courses for more than 500 patients at the same time.

Gulripshi's resort tradition was associated with the treatment of lung and respiratory diseases. The ruins can be explored on foot with caution.
