Zhovkva reveals its story through its history as a royal residence, its religious buildings and a market square at the heart of the town. Its sights represent different historical periods and architectural styles: from Jan III Sobieski’s castle to an 18th-century wooden church and historic town gates. You can discover the town’s history at these specific locations.

Royal residence history and religious architecture

In the second half of the 17th century, Zhovkva Castle was the residence of King Jan III Sobieski. The wooden Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1720 and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It brings together a clearly identifiable architectural style and an international World Heritage designation—two distinct aspects that shape how the building is viewed.

The museum’s described exhibition themes on the town’s history range from Zhovkva’s beginnings to the present day. They include the town’s multicultural life before the war and the wars that shaped Zhovkva.

Historic sights also include the Church of the Sacred Heart of Christ and the Basilian Monastery. The church contains murals by Julian Butsmaniuk, created in the first half of the 20th century. Together with the Church of the Holy Trinity and the synagogue, they offer a glimpse of different religious buildings, each with its own history.

Market square and town gates

Rynok Square, now called Vicheva Square, is the center of Zhovkva. The town’s streets converge here, and important buildings and historic townhouses stand around the square. Covered market arcades remain on the ground floors of the townhouses. They are a distinctive architectural detail that allows the square and its buildings to be viewed together.

The synagogue also brings together architectural history and surviving decoration: it was built in 1699, and part of its Baroque stucco decoration has been preserved. P. Beber is named as its architect. The town gates offer another interesting comparison: Zvirynets Gate retains original stone masonry from the early 17th century. Hlynska Gate, by contrast, was completely rebuilt in 1990 based on older drawings and photographs. The original masonry and later reconstruction illustrate different ways in which historic structures have been handed down.
