Lviv Oblast can be explored through two distinctive travel themes: mountain scenery and water attractions in Skole Beskids National Park, or castles and historic ensembles in various parts of the region. If you’re planning a holiday rental, consider which of these themes you’d like to focus your vacation days on.

Nature in Skole Beskids National Park

Ancient forests, mountain meadows and panoramic views define Skole Beskids National Park. It also has six waterfalls and the high-altitude Zhuravlyne Lake. Visitors to the park can see the waterfall on the Kamyanka River, Hurkalo Waterfall, Zhuravlyne Lake and the Selyshcha raised bog. The waterfalls, lake and raised bog offer different natural attractions within the same park.

Another side of the park can be discovered at the Butivlya Eco-Centre. Its exhibition includes everyday Boyko objects from the 19th and 20th centuries, contemporary pysanky and natural history exhibits. This brings the landscape and regional everyday culture together with natural history. Conditions for visiting the park may vary; check the current arrangements before visiting the Eco-Centre.

Yavoriv National Nature Park also offers a distinctive connection with nature: it has a centre for breeding and conserving the descendants of wild horses that are genetically related to the tarpan. For planning purposes, this focus can be distinguished from the water attractions and mountain landscapes of Skole Beskids National Park.

Castles and historic ensembles of Lviv Oblast

A regional overview from 2023 lists ten castles in Lviv Oblast: Brody, Dobromyl (Herburt Castle), Zhovkva, Zolochiv, Lviv (ruins), Olesko, Svirzh, Stare Selo, Pidhirtsi and Pomoriany. Olesko, Pidhirtsi and Zolochiv are grouped together as the “Golden Horseshoe” of the Lviv region. The individual sites differ in their architectural and landscape features.

Olesko Castle is surrounded by an 18th-century landscape park with ponds, avenues and sculptural compositions. The castle also houses a large collection of antiques and works of art. At Pidhirtsi, the castle and palace ensemble includes, alongside the castle, an 18th-century residence building and a park. The different elements of the ensemble are presented together here, while Olesko is shaped both by its collection and by its historic park.

The museum and reserve at Zolochiv Castle includes Renaissance complexes of the Grand Palace and the Chinese Palace, a gate tower, defensive walls with bastions and a landscape park. This offers a concrete way to compare the three castles and their different features: the park and collection at Olesko, the ensemble at Pidhirtsi, and the palace complexes and fortifications at Zolochiv.

Zhovkva Castle also tells a story of changing uses. The site successively served as a fortress, palace, school and residence with communal apartments; it was also used by the NKVD and the Gestapo as a torture chamber. Its historical significance is gradually being revived. The site’s history therefore extends beyond its architecture and forms part of the varied historical experiences that shape the castle landscape of Lviv Oblast.

When choosing a holiday rental, you can first decide on your preferred travel focus: a nature park and water attractions, an exhibition combining culture and natural history, or the individual historic ensembles. Those comparing castles as part of their travel plans will find different architectural points of interest at Olesko, Pidhirtsi and Zolochiv; those putting nature at the heart of their trip can take their cue from the landscapes and visitor attractions of the national park. This way, you can choose where to stay based on your own plans for Lviv Oblast.
