Timmele combines impressive hollow ways with tangible insights into the history of the area. North of Timmele Church, you can explore the landforms along the Ätran on foot; a nearby burial ground, an old communion chalice and a model of the church village offer further perspectives. A collection of motorized vehicles adds another distinctive feature. Timmele can thus be discovered from different angles—from traces in the landscape to objects and depictions of local history.

Hollow Ways along the Ätran and a Nearby Burial Ground

The Timmele hålvägar are located in a scenic area along the Ätran, immediately north of Timmele Church, and can be explored on foot. They consist of four parallel hollow ways. Their dimensions give a tangible sense of the landforms: the ways are up to 180 metres long, 10 metres wide and 4.5 metres deep. Length, width and depth each describe a different aspect of the hollow ways, making them an engaging subject for a walk. If you enjoy looking more closely, you can focus your visit on their parallel forms and different dimensions.

Next to the hollow ways is a burial ground with 45 burial mounds and 15 circular stone settings. These figures give a clear sense of the different forms and the extent of the site. The hollow ways and the burial ground each offer their own points of interest: here, the parallel cuts in the landscape; there, the burial mounds and circular stone settings. The hollow ways were once connected to an old ford across the Ätran. This also makes it possible to view the site in the context of an earlier river crossing.

The Church Village and Cultural History

Timmele Church houses a communion chalice dating from 1383, which is still in use. It is believed to be the oldest communion chalice still in use in Sweden. Its precise date and carefully qualified description make it a special detail for anyone interested in church heritage. Rather than experiencing history only as a grand narrative, here you encounter a tangible object that continues to serve its original purpose.

Another way to explore the church village is Timmele Miniby, a miniature model at a scale of 1:10. It shows what the houses and buildings in the area might have looked like in the late 19th century. The scale gives a clear sense of proportion, while the historical impression it depicts is explicitly an approximation. Miniby is outdoors. During your visit, the model offers a view of the church village as a whole, while the communion chalice represents a single, precisely dated object.

Another Collection: Motor Vehicles

The UlricehamnsBygdens MotorMuseum displays cars, motorcycles, mopeds and other motorized items from eight decades. This offers a different focus from the hollow ways, the burial ground or the church. If you are especially interested in vehicle and technology history, you can take this focus into account when deciding to stay in Timmele. The museum offered opening hours on certain weekends and by prior arrangement.
