At Hummerviken, extensive rocky areas characterize the coast; they continue into the sea. The landscape there is flat and barren, with sparse vegetation.

Coast and Water

Hjälviks badplats is located on Öckerö. Saltasvikens badplats is also located on Öckerö. Saltasviken is a cliff bathing spot in a bay on the western side of the island and has a concrete pier and ladders. Buoys at Saltasvikens badplats mark the area where swimming is permitted.

Harbor

Öckerö’s guest harbor is located in the southwestern part of the fishing harbor. Its facilities include two floating docks, a quay for mooring alongside, and space for around 30 boats. The guest harbor also has a bathing jetty with a sauna and an adjacent boules court. In Öckerö harbor, local fishermen offer cooked crayfish directly from their boats.

Culture and History

Mariakyrkan on Öckerö was built around 1240 as a wooden church. It features late Baroque ceiling paintings from the late 18th century, signed by Jean Lilliedal. Next to Öckerö gamla kyrka, several historic farm complexes with four residential buildings line Bygdevägen. Öckerö hembygdsförening maintains and revitalizes the area containing these historic farm complexes.

The Utställningshallen is located in the Öckerö library. There, it presents exhibitions covering a broad range of subjects and featuring diverse artistic techniques and forms of expression.

Getting There

Local bus routes 1 and 2 connect Fotö, Hönö, Öckerö, and Hälsö. In addition, ferry route 296 operates in Västtrafik’s public transport network between Öckerö, Framnäs on Björkö, Kalvsund, and Grötö. The Hönöleden connects Lilla Varholmen with Hönö/Öckerö. The ferry route is 2,500 meters long, and the crossing takes twelve minutes.
