Fengersfors is a destination for travellers who want to combine industrial heritage, water-based experiences and active pursuits. The area offers different ways to explore: you can discover the history of Fengersfors Bruk, explore art and events at Not Quite, spend time at Knarrbysjön or get to know the trails on foot. When looking for a suitable holiday apartment, the key question is therefore which of these experiences should shape your days on holiday.

Industrial history with unusual details

A large industrial complex made of red brick has been preserved at Fengersfors Bruk. It includes the chimney, the power station and important parts of the production line, from timber reception to the paper machine. The history of the site dates back to 1796: Fengersfors Bruk was founded then as an ironworks, processing bar iron into nails and other wrought iron. The operation later switched to producing pulp and paper; in 1901, the place was given the name Fengersfors.

The sulphate digester at Fengersfors Bruk, dating from 1950, is particularly noteworthy. It was the world's first continuous pulp digester. In 2015, Fengersfors Bruk also received the award “Årets industriminne” as Industrial Heritage Site of the Year. Anyone who enjoys tracing how a place has changed through its working and production history will find concrete points of reference here instead of a purely abstract historical narrative.

Not Quite also offers several cultural perspectives: public exhibitions at Oceanhuset and the Not Quite Gallery, a shop, a café and events of various kinds. The Not Quite Café and Bistro has been located in the old smithy of Fengersfors Bruk since 2003.

Lakes, river and bathing area

The waterscape can be experienced in different ways. Knarrbyån runs through the grounds of Fengersfors Bruk and, among other places, beneath part of the factory's main building. The river is approximately 3 kilometres long in total. It flows through a valley between Knarrbysjön to the north and Ärr to the south, and runs underground in places.

Knarrbysjöbadet is a family bathing area on Lake Knarrbysjön in the centre of Fengersfors. A small sandy beach and large grassy areas for playing create a clear contrast there to the industrial history of the Bruk. Fengersfors Ställplats, a pitch by Lake Knarrbysjön in Fengersfors, is also useful for orientation by the water.

Trails for active and varied days

There is a 2.5-kilometre fitness trail at the sports facility. The Ronjalandsleden trail runs through Fengersfors; along the route there is a shop, a bathing area and a cultural centre. The Fengersfors 8 route starts and ends in Fengersfors. It first heads north in the shape of a figure eight around Lake Knarrbysjön and then south around Lake Ärr. This allows you to plan your day around shorter periods of exercise or a longer route, without limiting the area to just one type of experience.

A trail with large ceramic works has been created southeast of the Bruk area on the so-called Mesafältet. The nearby Fröskogs kyrka is also interesting for an excursion with a cultural focus. The wood-clad church was inaugurated on 20 December 1730; its atmospheric interior is regarded as an example of peasant Baroque. Those who moor at the guest jetty in Fröskog can reach Fengersfors Bruk via a walking path of approximately 3 kilometres.

Choosing a holiday apartment to suit your own days on holiday

A holiday apartment in Fengersfors can suit a variety of travel plans: days spent between industrial history and exhibitions, swimming breaks at Knarrbysjön or a more active itinerary with a fitness trail and circular route. Families may look for the bathing area with its sandy beach and play areas, while culture enthusiasts may put Fengersfors Bruk, Not Quite, the ceramic works and Fröskogs kyrka at the centre of their plans.
