Nature Among Forests, Lakes and Archipelago Landscapes
Yttre Bodane is known for its forested archipelago landscape on Lake Vänern. The area is both a hiking trail and a nature reserve, and includes 11 nationally significant Bronze Age coastal stone cairns. Those who want to experience the landscape by more than just walking will also find good opportunities for kayaking; a launch site is located around 400 m south of the car park.
Hikers can choose between different routes. The Sörknatten Trail is 6.5 km long. Sörknatten Nature Reserve is described as a mountainous and forested area with a hiking trail. Large parts of the film Ronia, the Robber's Daughter were shot in the surroundings of Mount Sörknatten – an interesting connection for anyone wishing to combine landscape and film history.
Baståsen also has its own distinctive character. The nature reserve consists of a steep slope extending down to Lake Ärr and covered with deciduous forest. There, 32 species of snails and five different species of slugs have been recorded; Baståsen is therefore considered one of the most species-rich sites for land snails and other terrestrial molluscs in Dalsland. The Baståsen Trail is around 6 km long and partly follows Lake Ärr. For orientation, there is a shared car park at the northern entrance to Sörknatten Nature Reserve, as well as an information board featuring Sörknatten.
Cultural History in Ånimskog
Ånimskog Church is an important cultural landmark. Its interior is characterised by a provincial Baroque style from the 18th century. The painted wooden ceiling dates from 1739 and was created by Hans George Schüffner. The altarpiece from 1729 and the pulpit were created by Nils Falk. The oldest parts of the church were probably built towards the end of the 13th century. There is also a 13th-century baptismal font made from sandstone quarried near Kinnekulle. A panoramic view of the exterior and interior provides an initial impression without making any statement about current access to the church.
Further traces of the past can be found on the historic land of Ånimskog: four cist graves, or Stone Age stone burial chambers, have been identified there. The cist grave in Byn is on private property; visitors should park in the designated area. The Årbol School Museum complements the cultural and historical attractions with 6,000 schoolbooks from different periods.
Water Experiences and Practical Information
Lake Ånimmen is considered one of the most fish-rich lakes in Åmål Municipality. There is also a bathing area at Lake Furusjön near Ånimskog. Stora Strand bathing area can be reached from the campsite car park via a path through the forest measuring around 500 m. Ånimskog is served by, among other things, bus connections to Åmål. When choosing accommodation, this makes it possible to weigh up whether nature, culture, water experiences or a good connection to the main town should be the focus of the trip.
