Sala combines the history of silver mining with waterways, walking routes and remarkable art. Anyone wishing to plan a trip with varied daily itineraries will find both insights into the mining landscape and paths along the water, church art and the Aguélimuseet here. When choosing a holiday apartment in Sala, it is therefore worth deciding on your priorities: Should the day begin at the silver mine, follow a canal or combine cultural discoveries in the town?

Silver mine and waterside paths

One defining place is Sala Silvergruva. In the old mine stable, an exhibition presents mining beneath the water. The historic water system is also part of the area's identity: a large part of it has been preserved around Sala. Silver production may have begun as early as the 13th century; Sala itself was founded as a town in 1624, approximately 2.5 kilometres northeast of the mining area.

The waterways can be experienced along various routes. Gruvdammsrundan begins at the outlet of the water system in Sala and leads upstream towards the Järndammen area. Sala kanal offers a shorter option for orientation: the combined walking and cycling path is 2.5 kilometres each way, or 5 kilometres there and back. It is paved and continuously lit along the entire route. These details help you choose between a shorter canal circuit and a longer tour towards the dams for the day, without treating the two experiences as equivalent.

Walks, bridges and historic dams

Around Ekeby dammar in Sala's town park, a walking route passes numerous white bridges. The ponds were originally formed by the flow from Långforsen and later by an outlet canal from the mine. Fishing at Ekeby dammar is free, except for carp fishing. Depending on your travel plans, the site can therefore be considered either a peaceful walk or a destination for a fishing activity.

Gröna gången follows the waterways and dams built for the water system of Sala Silvergruva. The route begins at Ekeby dammar in central Sala, runs along Mellandammen and Lake Långforsen, and connects with Gruvdammsrundan at Järndammen. Anyone who enjoys combining different landscape impressions in one tour can explicitly include this described connection in their daily itinerary. For families with different interests, it is also advisable not to fit the walk, cycling route and cultural programme into one long day, but to alternate them according to the weather and energy levels.

Art, churches and architectural history

The Aguélimuseet displays the largest collection of works by Ivan Aguéli, including paintings and drawings. There are also changing exhibitions of contemporary art. Ivan Aguéli's remains are located in the cemetery of Kristina kyrka, near his birthplace. Anyone interested in art and personal local history can therefore explore these themes at several different sites in Sala.

Kristina kyrka was built of fieldstone and brick in the 17th century and inaugurated in 1641. Its furnishings include a pulpit, an altar structure and an organ-loft front from the 18th century. Sala Sockenkyrka probably originated in the 14th century. Its brick vaults were painted by Albertus Pictor; the date of their creation is estimated at around 1465–1470. The altarpiece comes from the workshop of the master Pasquier Borman in Brussels and is dated to around 1520. These examples, separated by many centuries, also make Sala interesting for a cultural stay focused on different historical periods.

Another architectural highlight is Sala f.d. varmbadhus. The building was constructed in the 1920s, is considered a good example of Classicist architecture and was declared a listed building in 1988. Väsby Kungsgård played a central role in the Crown's control of the silver mine and offers facilities in a historic setting for celebrations and activities indoors and outdoors.

Planning a holiday apartment and your journey

Sala railway station is served by both buses and trains. When planning your trip, you can therefore first consider whether you primarily want to organise your days along the waterways, around the silver mine or with several cultural stops. A holiday apartment in Sala can serve as a base for a trip alternating between self-planned walks, visits to the Aguélimuseet and excursions to historic sites. What matters less is following one uniform programme than finding the combination of mining history, activity and art that suits your trip.

For further destinations in the same broader region, you can then view Västerfärnebo, Salbohed, Möklinta and Broddbo.
