Timrå combines impressive coastal landscapes with a river delta, hiking trails and a rich cultural history. Sweden’s largest coastal delta lies at the mouth of the Indalsälven. Inland, there are also deep forests and expansive marshlands, while the coast features herb-rich meadows and warm sandy beaches. When choosing your holiday apartment in Timrå, it is therefore worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: observing nature, active days by the water or exploring historic sites.

Nature Experiences along the Indalsälven

In the Indalsälvens delta Nature Reserve, a 3-kilometre circular trail leads through the landscape. If you would like to plan a longer route that is also relatively accessible, you can reach Smackgrundet from the reserve’s car park via a 1.5-kilometre path. This route includes two footbridges that are wide enough for wheelchairs. The two trail lengths offer different options for a day out, without requiring you to stick to a single pace.

The delta is also a birdwatching area. During the breeding season, visitors can observe, among others, Arctic terns, reed buntings, rosefinches and various songbirds. Many migratory birds stop in the delta in spring and autumn. The nature reserve is signposted from the E4 between Sörberge and Söråker; the Deltavägen E4 bus stop is approximately 600 metres from the car park. This information will help you plan your journey and choose your accommodation in Timrå in line with your planned excursions.

Coast, Trails and Distinctive Landscapes

The Åstön Nature Reserve covers 395 hectares and approximately 15 kilometres of coastline. In the Skeppshamn area, a 18th-century chapel and a fishing museum are part of the local landscape. Another way to explore the surroundings on foot is stage 1 of the Timrå Kustvandring hiking trail. It runs for 22.8 kilometres from Timrå railway station to the Indalsälven delta. The Y:et–Fiskestigen circular route is shorter, at 4.9 kilometres.

At Y:et, there is a café and a tourist information office. The area is also the starting point for Sinnenas Vägar, where several hiking trails begin. The Y:et sculpture itself weighs 700 tonnes and is 30.5 metres high. These different trail lengths and destinations make Timrå an appealing choice for a trip that alternates longer days of hiking with shorter excursions.

Historic Sites in Timrå

The area’s cultural history also provides distinctive places to visit. Lögdö Bruk received its charter of privileges in 1685; iron production continued until 1878. In 2004, Lögdö Bruk was declared a municipal cultural reserve. Timrå kyrka was inaugurated in 1796 and stands on a site where medieval churches from the 15th and 13th centuries had previously stood. Iron Age graves and a chamber tomb dating from the 4th or 5th century were found next to the church.

Vivstavarvs kapell was built in 1891 as a fire station for the shipyard and sawmills. Merlo slott was built between 1883 and 1885 at the request of Fredrik Bünsow, who was born in Germany, and now serves as SCA’s central archive. The Storyspot audio app features ten newly produced stories about Timrå, located at various places in the town.

Timrå as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip

Anyone wishing to combine culture and landscape can include the historic sites, nature reserves, coastal trails and the delta in their daily itinerary. Salmon fishing is available at Bergeforsfisket on the Indalsälven. Riibygård in Bergeforsen offers trail rides, riding school activities and riding camps with Icelandic horses. At the Indalsälven delta, Timrå Golfklubb has an 18-hole seaside course, also known as a Norrland links course.

For a holiday apartment or holiday home in Timrå, the desired combination of coast, activity and culture is therefore particularly important. Families can alternate longer and shorter activities while taking their own interests into account, without turning every activity into a fixed programme. For further travel ideas in the surrounding area, you can also include Ljustorp and Söråker in your plans.
