The Indalsälven delta in Timrå is Sweden’s largest coastal delta. A southern part of the delta is designated as a nature reserve. If you are considering a holiday apartment in Timrå, the surrounding area offers nature, history and various activities.
Nature
The Indalsälven delta nature reserve has a 3-kilometre circular trail. From the nature reserve car park, there is also a 1.5-kilometre accessible path that crosses two footbridges to Smackgrundet. Smackgrundet is designated as a seaside bathing area in the Timrå area. The delta is also suitable for birdwatching: among others, Arctic terns, reed buntings, rosefinches and several species of songbirds breed there. Many migratory birds also stop there in spring and autumn.
The Indalsälven delta nature reserve is well signposted from the E4 between Sörberge and Söråker. The Deltavägen E4 bus stop is approximately 600 metres from the nature reserve car park. In the Y:et area at the Indalsälven delta, there is a playground, green spaces for picnics, a barbecue area and a toilet. Parking spaces for caravans and motorhomes are also available there.
On Åstön, the nature reserve preserves an approximately 15-kilometre stretch of coast that is unusually uninterrupted. The former military roads on Åstön are suitable for hiking and cycling, including with a pram. Fågelsången nature reserve has paths, steps and crossings over fences and is suitable for walks. Its area includes deciduous woodland, a seashore, small fields and areas of grazed natural pasture.
Culture and history
Lögdö Bruk has been a municipal cultural reserve since 2004. The largely preserved ironworks environment includes the grounds around the buildings and the old blast furnace. Lögdö Bruk operated from 1685 to 1878. The preserved buildings include, among others, a chapel, a manor house, a barn and a bakehouse. There are also 300- to 400-year-old pine trees near Lögdö Bruk showing traces of the rare beetle relic longhorn beetle.
The surroundings of Timrå kyrka also reach far back into the past. Iron Age graves and a chamber grave from the 4th or 5th century were found next to the church. The present-day Timrå kyrka was inaugurated in 1796 and stands on a site where medieval churches from the 15th and 13th centuries previously stood.
Vivstavarv Chapel was built in 1891 as a fire station, meaning the fire brigade station of that time, and was converted into a chapel in 1959. In summer, it is open to visitors through Sommarkyrkan. In Skeppshamn, there is a museum room showing how fishermen lived, as well as a herring and seal museum. The industrial history of Vivstavarv began in 1797 with a shipyard. It later included a steam sawmill, a pulp mill and a paper mill that operated until 2007.
Sports and leisure
The approximately 3-kilometre-long promenades in Söråker consist of illuminated walking and cycling paths by the sea. Lögdö vildmark offers opportunities for fishing, hiking and paddling. At Riibygård in Bergeforsen, trail rides, riding school activities and riding camps with Icelandic horses are offered.
The SCA Arena is the home venue of Timrå IK. Visitors can attend ice hockey games there. The arena is accessible by bus, car and taxi. Timrå simhall has lanes for swimming training; there is also a children’s pool and a relaxation area. The swimming pool also offers baby swimming with trained instructors.
