Njurunda: Church Ruin, Rivers and Historic Trails
Accommodation in Njurunda
Njurunda combines church history, river landscapes and trails that tell of the area's long-standing importance. In the centre of Njurundabommen lies the Njurunda Church Ruin. It is considered the most prominent evidence of the area's historical continuity.
Church History in Njurundabommen
Njurundabommen has long been a parish centre. The historic country road that ran through Njurundabommen in the 17th and 18th centuries passed the church and crossed the Ljungan. A ferry crossing was located on this river, where people were rowed across the water. This combination of church, route and river makes the local history particularly vivid.
About 1 km south of Njurundabommen lies Njurunda Church. It was built of stone in 1862 by J. F. Åbom. Its three-nave floor plan, raised central section and apsidal chancel give the building a clearly recognisable architectural form. Opposite the Njurunda Church Ruin, on the other side of the E4, is also the former banking building of Sundsvalls Enskilda Bank, later Sundsvallsbanken and Nordbanken. It was built in the National Romantic style in the 1920s.
Rivers and Trails for Different Day Plans
Stångån is a tributary of the Ljungan in Västernorrland County and flows into the Ljungan at Njurundabommen. The first weir on the Stångån was removed; restoration of this section of the watercourse had not yet been completed. Those interested in the development of river environments will find here, alongside the historical perspective, an insight into changes to the aquatic landscape.
For walks and bike rides, the Strandleden connects Kvissleby and Njurundabommen. The trail can be included in a travel plan if you would like to set aside time outdoors in addition to exploring church and local history. For a broader tour, there is the Botnialeden: it is 48 km long and runs between Södra Berget Sundsvall and Galtström. When members of a travel group have different interests, such options can help balance the daily rhythm between culture, outdoor activities and longer excursions.
For Sunday, 12 July, a pilgrimage walk from the church ruin in Njurundabommen to the chapel ruin near Nolby högar was planned, with a pilgrim mass scheduled for 11 a.m. This type of offering reveals another aspect of the area: Njurunda can be explored not only through buildings and trails, but also through religious history and historic connections.
