Mjällom combines impressive landscapes with an unusually vivid industrial history. The village has been an industrial community for more than 100 years; for several decades, flatbread baking and shoemaking shaped local employment. At the same time, trails lead to viewpoints, nature reserves and regional museums. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Mjällom can therefore plan their stay according to their preferred pace of travel: with nature experiences, cultural history or a mixture of both.

Viewpoints and Nature Reserves

The Norrfällsviken Nature Reserve in Mjällom contains an archaeological site with 14 stone cairn graves, most of which date from the Bronze Age. There is also a viewing platform with a view of the Bådamalen rubble field. In this landscape, nature observation and an insight into the region’s early history come together.

Another prominent viewpoint is Högklinten. From there, the view stretches from Örnsköldsvik in the north to Härnösand in the south. The Högklinten Nature Reserve can be reached via an almost 2 km-long footpath from the car park. The car park is located on the road from Nordingrå to Mjällom. There is also a circular hiking trail at the summit with beautiful views and several resting places. Those who prefer a longer hike with changing perspectives will find an upper route of 16.4 km and a lower route of 15.5 km in the Mjällom–Omne section.

Bredviksstugan also offers a wide view over Omnefjärden and the open sea. For travel planning, these destinations can be combined into different day-trip ideas without every activity requiring the same pace. The walk from the car park to Bredviksstugan takes about 30 minutes. Mjälloms Byaförening works on a voluntary basis to keep Bredviksstugan open and in good condition.

Industrial History and Museums

Mjällom’s history can be explored particularly well at Kulturfabriken. The Kulturfabriken museum presents Mjällom’s development in industry, sawmilling, fishing and agriculture. The Kulturfabriken exhibition is housed in Ivar E Norlin’s former shoe factory. With this former shoe factory, Kulturfabriken Höga Kusten recalls the period when Mjällom was a centre of shoemaking in Sweden. Every summer, various local artists and craftspeople exhibit their work there.

Another focus is on technology and regional everyday history. Motormuseet i Höga Kusten houses one of northern Sweden’s largest collections of boats, stationary engines, hot-bulb engines and outboard motors. The oldest engine in the collection dates from 1903. In addition, Mjälloms Tunnbröd, Sweden’s oldest flatbread bakery, points to a local tradition whose origins lie in a small bakery in Mjällom. Flatbread baking and shoemaking provided employment there for several decades.

Hiking Route with Different Levels of Difficulty

The Mjällom–Omne section is suitable for making a considered choice of route. The upper and lower options differ not only in length but also in their classification: depending on the route chosen, the section is rated as moderate to challenging. The lower option passes the Mjällomviken Motor Museum, combining a hike with a cultural stop. Those who want to focus more on views and the hiking experience can take the stated length and difficulty level into account when planning their day.

Local buses from Kramfors and Ullånger to Nordingrå Vallen and Mjällom respectively are available for the journey. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth using your planned activities as a guide: nature destinations, museum visits and longer hikes each place different demands on your itinerary. This allows you to choose accommodation in Mjällom based on which combination of landscape, industrial heritage and personal day planning best suits your trip.
