Discover Örträsk: Lakes, Hiking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Örträsk
Örträsk between church, log-driving history and lakes
Örträsk offers both a cultural and a water-based perspective for planning your trip. Örträsk Church is one of the best-preserved churches in the Neoclassical style in Upper Norrland. Anyone interested in regional architectural history will find a distinctive starting point here for discovering the area.
Another special feature is Örträskdammen. It is located in the Öreälven immediately below the lake's outlet, forms part of an area of national interest for cultural heritage conservation and is a remarkable testimony to the era of log driving. Örträskdammen is clearly visible from the car park; the path there is approximately 200 metres long. At the heritage farm in Örträsk, you can also see a granary dating from 1680, considered one of the oldest buildings in Southern Lapland.
Hiking trails between lake and river
Two clearly described routes are available for different hiking plans. The Öreälvsleden hiking trail runs from Lake Örträsksjön to the mouth of the Öreälven. The newly established Örträskleden, on the other hand, is a hiking trail around Lake Örträsksjön. This allows you to plan your day according to whether you prefer a route between the lake and river or a loop around the lake.
Along the Öreälvsleden, there are overnight huts, barbecue areas, wind shelters, dry toilets and beaches suitable for swimming. These facilities are part of the trail and can be taken into account when planning a longer hike. Örträsket is the largest lake in the Öreälven and adds to the character of the water-rich surroundings.
Guidance for travelling with children and different needs
If you are travelling with a pram or need a wide path, the trail to Gaffelberget is relevant in summer: it is wide enough for wheelchairs and prams, but not all the way to the rest area. This specific limitation should be taken into account when planning. Örträskdammen can also be easily viewed from the car park, without having to cover a long distance.
Fishing and river landscape
The Örträsk FVO includes parts of the Vargån River. The flowing sections of the Vargån contain grayling and trout. Fishing for perch, pike, whitefish and trout is possible at Sandsjön. This means that, in addition to culture and hiking, Örträsk also offers concrete opportunities for travellers who want to spend their days by the water.
Choose the right accommodation for your travel plans
When searching for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Örträsk, you can choose your accommodation according to the desired focus of your trip. If you are staying with a pram, also check the seasonal restriction on the trail to Gaffelberget.
If you would like to compare other destinations beyond Örträsk, you can also include Vormsele and Lycksele in your travel plans.
