Ekshärad: Culture, the Klarälven and Ekesberget
Accommodation in Ekshärad
Ekshärad combines an impressive cultural history with active experiences on the Klarälven. Anyone planning a trip involving historical discoveries, canoeing, fishing and winter sports will find several different options for planning their days. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering whether the holiday should focus primarily on culture, water-based activities or exercise in the snow.
Cultural history in the church, chapel and local heritage museum
An important cultural landmark is Ekshärad Church. It houses a late-medieval altarpiece dating from the 15th-century church. An audio guide is available in Swedish, English, German, Dutch and the Ekshärad dialect for visitors. This allows you to choose the language for your tour that best suits your travel group. During the summer season, the church is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for worship and visits until the All Saints' holiday.
Sankta Anna's Chapel, also known as Ekshärad's stave church, was built in 2002 to commemorate the medieval pilgrimage route that passed through Ekshärad. Another historical highlight is Ekshärad's local heritage centre. It was inaugurated on 23 September 1928 and is one of the oldest local heritage museums in Värmland. Together with the Ekshäradspelaren, a totem pole unveiled on 29 July 1989, these sites provide several links to the history of the area. The symbols on the pole tell the story of this regional past.
Water, fishing and winter days
The Klarälven offers another way to experience Ekshärad. A three-day canoe trip on the Klarälven with two overnight stays passes through Ekshärad. This travel idea is aimed at anyone who wants to spend several days on the water and get to know the area as part of a longer tour. For a shorter stay, the fishing access point at Byn provides a specific connection to the area: it is located on the eastern bank of the Klarälven, 500 m from the centre of Ekshärad.
Public fishing is possible in the Klarälven fishing area, Klarälvens FVOF, for a fee. Anyone choosing a holiday apartment for a trip with varied daily plans can combine culture and river activities without structuring the entire stay around just one seasonal pursuit. During the colder season, Ekesberget provides another option: both downhill and cross-country skiing are available there. This means that two different forms of skiing are available in winter.
Ekshärad as a base for planning your trip
Ekshärad's strength lies in the way it combines different interests. One day can be devoted to the church, the audio guide and the historic memorial sites; another can take you to the Klarälven or on a multi-day canoe trip. Those travelling in winter can focus on downhill or cross-country skiing at Ekesberget. This allows families to choose between a quieter cultural programme and active pursuits without limiting the trip to just one type of experience.
