Gräsö combines an archipelago landscape, culture and a variety of excursions within a compact thematic area. You can discover historic church art, hike along paths offering insights into the history of the landscape, swim from rocks or a sandy beach, and enjoy views across the archipelago from lookout points. This combination makes choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home primarily a question of your preferred daily rhythm: should the focus be on culture, nature, water-based experiences or a range of different excursions?

Culture and special places on Gräsö

An important cultural landmark is today’s Gräsö kyrka. The timber-built archipelago church was constructed between 1695 and 1697 and has a beautiful 15th-century altarpiece. Thus, an early modern church and a considerably older piece of furnishings come together in one place. Naturens Tempel is another unusual feature of the island: the site is inspired by the biblical paradise.

In summer, an art exhibition is held at the Anders Mats gården farm in Söderboda. This allows you to combine experiencing the landscape with culture when planning your trip, without every day of your holiday having to look the same. Those interested in the history of the landscape can find information about the landscape in the past and present along the approximately 1.5 km-long Västerbystigen trail.

Landscape between pastures, forest and archipelago

The areas around Västerbyn display old field patterns, including arable islands and small cultivated areas crossed by ditches. They show how the agriculture of the archipelago population shaped the landscape over centuries. Högklyksberget on the eastern side of Gräsön offers a different view of the surroundings. From there, the view extends far across the archipelago.

Idöns naturreservat lies in the south of Gräsön. There you can expect expansive sea views, open woodland, open grazing areas and signposted paths. Near Gräsö gård, two circular trails of 1.7 and 3.5 km respectively lead through a large fenced area with flower-rich pastures and hilly woodland. In May and June, the Adam and Eve orchid can be seen, among other places, in the pasture at Kostigen and at the beginning of the Kattskärsstigen trail.

Planning bathing spots and excursions

At Gräsöbadet, you can swim from the rocks or a sandy beach. After the ferry crossing, the bathing area is about 1 km to the north; a footpath and cycle path are available. In Kattskär, you can swim from the rocks, barbecue and enjoy the view of the sea. This makes it possible to combine active trails, nature observation and time by the water in different daily itineraries.

The ferry from Öregrund to Gräsö runs several times an hour. At the Äspskär landing stage, many day visitors take passenger boats out into the archipelago. The information centre near Gräsö gård provides tips on other excursion destinations on Gräsö. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you mainly want to explore the landscape, plan visits to bathing spots, or combine culture and nature.
