Gimo – Knutmasso, Gimo bruk and hiking trails
Accommodation in Gimo
Gimo combines a multifaceted history with trails, water activities and vibrant traditions. If you are looking for an apartment or holiday home, the area is particularly interesting when you want to combine culture and outdoor activities during your stay. You can choose your accommodation based on the experiences that are central to your trip.
History, the church and the Knutmasso tradition
The history of Gimo bruk dates back to 1615. At that time, the Crown had a forge for iron production built there. Gimo bruk is regarded as one of Sweden’s most cohesive manor estates and, overall, one of the best-preserved both externally and internally. Gimo Herrgård, together with its associated 18th-century stable buildings, is also part of the historic character of the area; today, the estate is a hotel and conference complex.
Another significant building is Skäfthammars kyrka in Gimo, a late-medieval parish church in Uppland. Its interior is characterised by rich frescoes from the late 16th century and Baroque furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Those interested in ecclesiastical architecture and historic interiors will find a distinctive cultural attraction here.
Gimo is also closely associated with Knutmasso. In the old Kvarnenhuset, the Knutmassomuseet displays figures and masks from earlier Knutmasso celebrations. Knutmassomysteriet is a playful family exhibition about Gimo’s Knutmasso tradition. Knutmasso takes place in Gimo every year on Tjugondag Knut. Participants dress up, and the carnival then makes its way along Bruksgatan. For families, this tradition can provide a particularly vivid introduction to the local culture.
Hiking, swimming and sporting alternatives
Vallonstigen is a 5 km-long hiking trail in Gimo with information boards about Gimo bruk. The route thus combines exercise with insights into the area’s history. In addition, Vikingaleden connects with Upplandsleden in Gimo. If you enjoy filling your holiday with walks and longer hikes, you can take both options into account when planning your trip.
Gimobadet at Gimodammen is ideal for relaxing hours by the water. The child-friendly bathing area has large lawns, jetties, a swimming jetty, barbecue areas and a ramp for people with reduced mobility. This allows you to round off an active day with time by the water, without your trip having to focus exclusively on culture or hiking.
Another option is Gimo simhall. It has two swimming pools in the immediate vicinity of a gym and a sports hall. This combination expands the range of activities and can play a role in creating a varied stay.
Which accommodation suits your travel plans?
Gimo’s various facets allow for different focuses: visitors interested in history can include Gimo bruk, Gimo Herrgård and Skäfthammars kyrka in their plans, while Vallonstigen and the connection between Vikingaleden and Upplandsleden put the emphasis on exercise. Gimobadet and Gimo simhall add water-based and sporting experiences to the range of activities.
If you are looking for accommodation in Gimo, first consider which of these themes should shape your days. An apartment or holiday home can then serve as the basis for your individual daily plans.
