Solna brings together nature, cultural history and urban venues in a remarkable way within a small area. Around half of the area consists of parks, nature or water.

Nature

Ulriksdal Nature Reserve lies between the sea inlets of Edsviken and Brunnsviken on the wooded Stockholm ridge. The Igelbäcken stream flows through the area and is home to the rare common gudgeon. The landscape also includes a hundred-year-old spruce forest and pine trees on the rocky areas that are up to 200 years old. The reserve is also home to one of the largest burial grounds from the Late Iron Age in the Stockholm area.

Another natural setting is offered by Råstasjön Nature Reserve, next to Gamla Råsunda and Arenastaden. It has a diverse bird population, including one of the largest black-headed gull colonies in Stockholm County. There is also a diverse bat population with seven species.

Parkland and orientation

The Solna section of the Royal National City Park includes Haga, Brunnsviken, Ulriksdal and Bergshamra with the Tivoli peninsula. The Royal National City Park is accessible to everyone around the clock throughout the year. Solna’s hiking guides contain images, read-aloud texts and an integrated GPS navigation aid.

Culture and history

Hagaparken is part of the Royal National City Park. The park is also home to the Haga Park Museum. Ulriksdal Palace, built in the 17th century, is likewise located within the Royal National City Park. Guided tours are offered on the palace grounds.

The Orangerimuseet is located in the Ulriksdal Palace Park, in an orangery building constructed in the 17th century. Works by the Swedish sculptors Carl Milles and Johan Tobias Sergel can be seen there. Another historic cultural site is Confidencen. The theatre is considered Sweden’s oldest Rococo theatre and dates from 1753. Confidencen offers performances and guided tours.

Gamla Hagalund preserves several buildings concentrated around the Odin neighbourhood on Hagalundsgatan. Solna Church is one of Stockholm’s few round churches and was probably built in the 1180s. Överjärva gård is an urban ecology centre in a cultural-historical setting that has been inhabited since the 5th century.

Film and events

Filmstaden can be reached via the blue metro line towards Akalla, getting off at Näckrosen station. Between 1920 and 1971, Svensk Filmindustri and other film companies shot more than 400 films there. Filmstaden therefore represents a clearly defined period in Swedish film history.

Strawberry Arena, also known as Friends Arena, is a large concert, sports and events stadium in Solna. It serves as Sweden’s national football stadium and as the home stadium of AIK.
