Sollentuna combines expansive landscapes with traces of Swedish history and various opportunities to explore the surroundings on foot, by bicycle or, in winter, on skis. The Östra Järvafältet nature reserve forms the part of Järvafältet belonging to Sollentuna. There, farmland and pastures meet deciduous and coniferous forests, wetlands and lakes.
Nature
The Östra Järvafältet nature reserve has marked paths and trails for hiking, horseback riding and skiing. Rest areas, rest huts and cafés complement the trail network. Another notable route is Törnskogen runt: The approximately 9-kilometre hiking trail leads through the northern and southern nature reserves of Törnskogen. Bus route 527 runs from Sollentuna commuter train station to the Törnskogen area.
The Rösjön runt circular trail passes lichen-covered rock surfaces, oak trees, beaches and meadows. The long-distance Roslagsleden trail also runs through Rösjöskogen; this section is marked in orange. The Rösjöskogen nature reserve encompasses Lake Rösjön with easily accessible shores, mature coniferous forests and open cultural landscapes with traces dating back to the Bronze Age.
The Tegelhagsskogen nature reserve can be reached via easily accessible paths through forest and open landscapes and along Edsviken. There are bathing opportunities and designated barbecue areas.
Trails and activities
The Järva cycling trail runs through Sollentuna and forms a circular route of up to 70 kilometres. Between Ulriksdal and Rotebro, it connects urban, cultural and natural environments. The route can be started at several stations around Järvafältet; old farmsteads and cultural landscapes lie along the way.
For winter sports, Väsjöbacken has four ski slopes and five lifts. These include a children's slope and a fun park with rails and a halfpipe for tricks on snowboards and skis.
History
The reconstructed Långbroleden is a trail dating from the Viking Age. Near Snuggan, it is marked by an 11th-century rune stone.
Edsbergs slott was built in 1760. Its furniture and interior furnishings preserve the impression of what the house looked like during the Rudbeck family's almost 200-year residence. Edsbergs slott is open to visitors on Wednesdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 16:00; admission is free.
Landsnora kvarn och såg is a water-powered mill and sawmill built around 1630 and is considered Sollentuna's oldest secular building. Milling resumed in Landsnora in 1986, and the mill and sawmill have also been open to the public since then. The water-powered frame saw operates during the annual mill days and can saw large logs.
The Klasro school museum is located in Sollentuna's oldest schoolhouse, built in 1804. Visitors can experience a historic school day there and try writing in a sand tray.
Engelska parken contains 114 graves; the site is described as Sweden's oldest maintained burial ground. Hersby hembygdsgård preserves the setting of a typical Uppland farm, with stone residential buildings and wooden outbuildings from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Culture
You can stroll and picnic in Edsbergsparken. A viewpoint offers an outdoor fitness facility, a playground and an observation platform overlooking Edsviken.
Stallbacken kultur is located in a former barn and offers art exhibitions and cultural activities. Among other things, lunchtime programmes take place there on Thursdays; the programme also includes concerts, performances and Funkisallsång. Funkisallsång is inclusive communal singing.
Annual events
A Midsummer celebration is held every year at Hersby hembygdsgård. Överby windmill hosts two mill days every year, one in spring and one in autumn; grain is ground into flour during these events. Edsbacka market takes place every year in September in Edsvik in Sollentuna.
Bögs gård has heated shelters, designated barbecue areas and a car park in the immediate vicinity.
