As a fishing village on the Svartån and a natural settlement site since the Stone Age, Svarte has a strong connection to the river, the sea and local history. The Svartån flows into the sea here; at the same time, a coastal cycle route runs from Ystad to Svarte, and the Historierundan follows the coast to the village. These different points of interest make Svarte an appealing destination if you would like to include historic places and coastal routes in your holiday plans. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may help to first consider whether you would like to focus on local history, cycling or travelling by train.

Traces of local history

The oldest houses in Svarte were built in the 1850s and 1860s. Other parts of the village feature the 19th-century Gatehus style of development. These offer two different ways to appreciate Svarte as a village that has grown over time: on the one hand, there is a clearly defined period for the oldest houses, and on the other, a building style that can be seen in other parts of the village. Together with its history as a fishing village on the Svartån, this offers a view ranging from the village's cultural character to specific architectural features.

Disas Ting: Form and open interpretations

One archaeological landmark in Svarte is Disas Ting, an ancient site. The stone circle is rectangular and measures 36 × 16 metres. These dimensions make its shape easier to picture: the longer measurement is more than twice the shorter one. There are at least two different interpretations of Disas Ting, and both remain uncertain. Those interested in archaeology will therefore find not only a tangible structure here, but also an open historical question. Neither interpretation should be treated as a confirmed explanation.

Coastal connections and routes

The bathing spots listed by the Municipality of Ystad extend west as far as Svarte. A cycle route runs from Ystad along the sea to Svarte and continues through the rest of Skåne. The two details highlight different aspects: the bathing spots mark Svarte as the western endpoint of the listed series, while the cycle route places the village within a longer coastal connection. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, this distinction may help with your planning: would you like to explore the coastal setting locally, or plan your holiday around a longer cycling route?

The Historierundan also follows the coast to Svarte. According to the municipal route information, updated on 31 October 2024, there are no route markers; you can download GPX points to a mobile phone or GPS watch. Check the latest route information before setting out. This is particularly useful when planning to use digital route points, while the coastal cycling connection differs in that it is explicitly identified as a cycle route.

Another reference point for outdoor activities can be found at Lilleskog: where Lilleskog ends, opportunities for leisure activities continue westwards towards Svarte.

Getting here and choosing accommodation

Trains from Ystad and Malmö stop at Svarte station several times a day. As timetables can change, check the latest connections before travelling. If you are arriving by train, you can factor the timetable into your plans; for days spent cycling, the coastal cycle route offers a different focus.
