Trelleborg combines Viking history, historic townscapes and coastal nature with a variety of trails for active exploration.

Discover the Viking Age and the city’s history

A prominent destination is the Trelleborgen ring fortress: a quarter of the complex was reconstructed at its exact original location. At the Viking event “Slaget om Trelleborgen” on the second weekend after Midsummer, a Viking market, music and crafts come together. This makes the event a special occasion for anyone who wants to experience history not only in exhibitions but also in a lively event setting.

In the centre is the Trelleborgs Museum, an art and cultural history museum at Stortorget. Axel Ebbes Konsthall is also one of the city’s cultural landmarks. The functionalist building dates from 1935 and houses Axel Ebbe’s collected works, including sculptures, graphic art and poems. Gamla Torget and Bryggaregatan also tell the story of the city’s earlier history. The oldest parts of Trelleborg lie around Gamla Torget. The church, monastery and market square once formed the city centre there. Bryggaregatan is one of Sweden’s oldest streets and follows the same route as the road in the 7th century that led from the coast to the major trading centre of Uppåkra.

Another historic landmark is Sandmöllan, Trelleborg’s only surviving windmill. It is a post mill from the 17th century. Anyone who enjoys combining sightseeing with breaks can include the easily walkable centre, with its pedestrian zone, shops, restaurants and outdoor dining, in their day’s plans.

Coast, nature reserves and trails

Trelleborg also offers specific nature experiences beyond its historical attractions. Dalköpinge ängar is a coastal nature reserve on the outskirts of the city. The Skåneleden runs along the coast there. From Trelleborg, you can follow this long-distance trail northwards across the plain or eastwards along the coast. This allows you to tailor your trip planning to your preferred landscape without having to limit culture and nature to the same type of day.

Jättegraven, a prehistoric monument dating from around 4000 BC, lies within the Dalköpingeån nature reserve. The structure is 64 metres long and 7 metres wide and is considered the largest of its kind in Sweden. In the municipal marine reserve Fredshög-Stavstensudde outside Skåre in Trelleborg Municipality, bladderwrack forests and seagrass meadows grow. Resting seals can occasionally be observed on stones protruding from the water. East of Skåre harbour there is also an underwater nature trail with information boards at a depth of 1 to 2 metres providing information about the animal and plant life.

Experiences for different days of travel

For adults and children, the audio experience “Spåret för nyfikna” within the “ÖGA mot ÖGA” exhibition offers an experience in its own right. Those who prefer to travel on foot can also consider the pilgrim route. It begins in the monastery garden in Trelleborg and is independently marked. Palmtåget offers a different way of getting around: the free hop-on hop-off train runs between Trelleborg’s attractions.

When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore decide primarily according to which travel focus matters most to you: historic sites and museums, walks in the centre, coastal landscapes or longer trails. Palmfestivalen has taken place on the last weekend of August since 1976, filling Trelleborg’s streets with music, fairground rides, food and market stalls. Taking this date into account lets you experience the city in a particularly eventful setting.
