Limhamn combines impressive traces of geological history with coastal landscapes, maritime traditions and remarkable cultural sites. One particularly unusual destination is Limhamns kalkbrott: the area has been a nature reserve since 2011 and is managed by Malmö stad. Visits are only possible as part of a guided tour organised by Vilda Malmö. Some limestone layers contain numerous shark teeth from sharks that swam here millions of years ago. For your travel planning, this is an experience with a clear organisational requirement.

Discover Culture and History in Limhamn

Limhamns Museum was inaugurated on 27 June 1959 in the old soldiers’ cottage. The building stands on a remnant of Järavallen and above one of Sweden’s oldest Stone Age settlements. A visit to the museum therefore leads not only into the more recent history of the area, but also to a landscape with a far-reaching past.

Another prominent cultural site is Limhamns kyrka. The red-brick church has transept arms to the north and south, as well as a patterned slate roof, and was inaugurated on Thanksgiving Day in October 1890. Inside is a votive ship: the model of the frigate Calmare Nyckel was made by Ture Hall and donated by Enar Nilsson-Neglén in 1962. The gallery organ also has a history of its own. It was originally built in 1867 by P L Åkerman & Lund Orgelfabrik in Stockholm and rebuilt several times over the years.

Harbour Sites, Coast and Special Bathing Spots

Limhamn’s history is also evident at the old landing places. At Kåsen on Strandgatan, there are several old-style fishermen’s cottages. Kåsen is the only preserved old landing place in Limhamn. In the water off Kåsen are also the remains of Sandegårds brygga, a stone jetty that was formerly used for loading limestone. The southern part of Limhamns hamnområde contains a marina and fishermen’s cottages; many recreational anglers can also be found there.

For a stay by the water, Sibbarps kallbadhus is an appealing option, offering year-round cold bathing in the open sea. Sibbarpsstranden has bathing jetties and large areas for picnics. The shallow stretch of beach beside the cold bathhouse on the side facing Malmö has protective stones in the water and is suitable for smaller children. This makes it possible to combine different interests during one trip: a day of swimming, a picnic or a view of the coastal landscape can complement cultural discoveries.

Green Shores and Practical Orientation

At Cementkajen, a new park and a new square form a continuous green waterfront promenade with seating and illuminated sculptures. Hammars park was created towards the end of the 19th century on the initiative of Carl Anders Hammar. If you would also like to plan a route towards Malmö, you can consider the Super Cycle Path: it runs from Linnégatan in Limhamn via Erikslustvägen and Regementsgatan to central Malmö.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore decide according to your preferred travel rhythm: should the trip focus primarily on natural history, church art and the area’s maritime past, or should the sea, picnic areas and time by the water take centre stage? Limhamn offers various thematic starting points, so you do not have to limit yourself to just one way of exploring the area.
