Discover Kisa: Culture, History and Active Days
Accommodation in Kisa
Kisa combines history, regional culture and a variety of activities within a compact area. Those planning a trip with shared discoveries, exercise and relaxing moments by the water will find plenty of inspiration for planning their days. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first consider which of these experiences you would like to make the focus of your stay.
Culture and History in Kisa
The Kisa Emigrant Museum presents stories and personal destinies connected with the region’s emigration history. Another way to explore the area’s history is “Vandring i Kisa”: the map contains visiting tips and a brief historical background for each listed location. This makes it possible to get to know Kisa not only through individual sights, but also through their respective stories.
Borgarberget in Kisa bears traces of a hillfort. It served as a refuge and an important observation post for the surrounding area. For visitors interested in older settlement and defensive structures, this site complements the museum experience with an example from the landscape.
Kisa Hembygdsgård offers an extensive insight into the region’s everyday life and building history. The site consists of 14 historic buildings from across the Kinda area. The main building is a manor house from the 17th century, from Hovby gård in the parish of Västra Eneby. Nya Logen is home, among other things, to a photography museum. Lokstallet i Kisa also tells a story from the past: in recent years, it has been restored to the appearance it had when it was built by Östra Centralbanans Järnvägsaktiebolaget in 1901.
Water, Trails and Exercise
For a more peaceful break, consider Värgårdsudde badplats on Lake Kisasjön in central Kisa. It has a jetty as well as a small sandy beach or a small grassy area. Those who prefer to stay active can include the Östgötaleden trail in their plans. It leads south from Kisa to the Sevedeleden trail in Småland.
You can also make your stay more active. Kisa MTB Park offers blue flow trails as well as black tracks. This allows you to choose between a stay focused on cultural visits, water-based experiences, hikes or more challenging days of cycling, without limiting the trip to just one activity.
A Place with a Long Travel History
Kisa has been a place for travellers since the early 17th century. The inn was mentioned as Kisa Krogh in 1644 and served at that time as a royal stable, as the inland road between the castles of Stockholm and Kalmar passed through here. This history gives the place an additional perspective: Kisa was not only a setting for regional culture, but was also connected to historic travel routes.
For many visitors, a stay also includes a break featuring local impressions. Café Columbia serves fika and meals. It was opened by Dorothea Florén in 1921. When planning your trip, a café visit can therefore easily be combined with a cultural or sightseeing day, without requiring a fixed itinerary.
