Glanshammar combines an impressive cultural landscape with nature experiences around forests, nature reserves and Lake Hjälmaren. Anyone who wants to combine a trip featuring historical discoveries, short walks and longer excursions will find various options for planning each day. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether culture, nature or a varied cycling tour should be the main focus of your stay.

Glanshammar Church and Cultural Landscape

Glanshammar Church is at the heart of the area’s history. A small wooden church probably stood here as early as the 11th century. By the end of the Middle Ages, the church had been converted into a two-aisled building with decorative star vaults. Today, it still contains well-preserved ceiling and wall paintings from 1589 by Anders Jordansson Ryttare. The church is considered one of the most culturally and historically significant churches in Örebro County and features rare 16th-century vault and wall paintings.

The cultural landscape next to the church includes an important archaeological site from the Late Iron Age, as well as the remains of older settlements in the village of Glanshammar. The history of the rune stones also makes the area special: eight of the approximately 30 known rune stones in Närke were found at or near Glanshammar Church. Visitors interested in early settlement history, sacred architecture and regional archaeology can connect these themes here without losing sight of the character of the area.

Burial Ground and Rune Stone as Historical Destinations

The Glanshammar burial ground is located along the road north of the town centre. It comprises three burial mounds, three stone settings and a ship setting with nine upright stones. The burial ground dates from the Late Iron Age, approximately from AD 400 to 1050. The historical forms and the landscape together provide a vivid introduction to an era that can be encountered in Glanshammar not only through dates, but also through visible structures. The burial ground is also home to a rich variety of animal and plant life, including the rare pasque flower.

Another prominent historical witness is the two-metre-high Nä 34 Nasta rune stone. It stands beside the main road between Fellingsbro and Örebro, just over three kilometres northwest of Glanshammar, and bears an inscription from the 11th century. Destinations like this are suitable for travel planning in which individual historical sites are deliberately combined with a drive through the surrounding area.

Nature Reserves and Trails Around the Area

The nearby Tåsta Nature Reserve and Löreskogen offer different natural landscapes. The Tåsta Nature Reserve is home to numerous demanding plant and fungus species due to its limestone-rich soil. A marked circular trail of approximately 2.2 kilometres runs through the eastern part. Silver ore was mined at Evighetsgruvan in the 18th century. For orientation when travelling there, bus 322 stops west of the Tåsta Nature Reserve at the Hagaby skola or Backa stops.

Löreskogen is a municipal nature reserve and part of a larger recreational area near the village of Glanshammar. Limestone-rich coniferous and deciduous forests grow there on marble bedrock, with a wealth of different herb and fungus species. Löreskogen Nature Reserve is intended to be accessible for recreation and leisure activities.

Cycle Route and Further Excursion Options

For longer excursions, the Hemfjärden runt cycle route is a good option. It is 42 kilometres long, runs around the western part of Lake Hjälmaren and passes through Glanshammar. For more than 30 years, it has offered visitors varied nature experiences. Cycling is not permitted, however, on the training tracks or circuits in Skölvboslätt/Glanshammar. This distinction is useful when planning a trip and looking for accommodation for a cycling holiday, as it helps you distinguish between the Hemfjärden runt cycle route and the local circuits. Tjugestasjön is also a bathing spot in Örebro Municipality.

Glanshammar therefore suits a variety of travel ideas: You can focus on the church and archaeological traces, explore the nature reserves or plan a longer cycle tour around Lake Hjälmaren. For more ideas in the area, you can also look at Kilsmo, Blacksta, Vintrosa, Hampetorp, Odensbacken, Garphyttan, Gunnarsökna and Örebro.
