Örebro makes contemporary art visible in the urban space: OpenArt is Örebro’s recurring art biennial for contemporary art from around the world. During three summer months, it presents works throughout the city of Örebro, including in public spaces and along the Svartån. Most of the artworks are outdoors and can be experienced around the clock. OpenArt can be experienced without an admission ticket.
History
Örebro Castle has origins dating back to the 14th century. Historical guided tours are offered at the castle, and there are also one or more exhibitions in the historic halls. Örebro Castle is located in the city centre of Örebro; the waters of the Svartån surround it.
Culture
With its wooden houses and courtyards, Wadköping represents Örebro’s older buildings and urban surroundings. It has museums, exhibitions, cafés, a restaurant, craft workshops and shops. Throughout the year, Wadköping hosts markets, concerts, theatre performances, lectures, art exhibitions, music evenings and dance events. In August and December, there are also food and drink markets featuring local flavours and handicrafts.
Örebro Konsthall is a municipal art gallery focusing on contemporary art. Kulturkvarteret is an inclusive meeting place for everyone, with a particular focus on children and young people. Kretsloppslandet is part of Tekniska kvarnen. Stadsträdgården has greenhouses and an exhibition space.
Örebro County Museum displays collections of photographs, art and cultural-historical objects in exhibitions and in the Digitalt Museum. Mobila museet is Örebro County Museum on four wheels and can be booked by private individuals. Occasional live music and other events take place 58 metres above the ground at Svampen.
Nature
Oset and Rynningeviken are a municipal nature reserve. Rynningeviken contains grazing land, riparian forests, waterside meadows and shallow reed bays. Oset comprises wetlands rich in birdlife. The walking paths in the Oset and Rynningeviken nature reserve have been adapted for people with mobility impairments.
Paths and water
Lilla Å-promenaden is an approximately four-kilometre-long walking and cycling path along the Lillån. It includes ten sculptures and an art house on the theme of people and nature. Between Åkulleparken and Ulla Billquists park, there is evening lighting that has received the Svenska Ljuspriset award.
Karlslund offers walking and cycling paths. The Karlslund power station dates from 1897. Slottsparken is Örebro’s oldest park and was laid out in the 1770s. Fishing is permitted free of charge in Slottsparken; this applies in the Svartån as far as Karlslund.
