Holiday apartment in Degerfors – nature, trails and culture

Degerfors can be explored through natural and cultural areas. Marked trails, geological formations, traditional sites and unusual nature observations give the area different facets. This diversity is reflected in specific landscapes, historical traces and different activities.

Nature

The Sveafallen nature reserve is a geologically significant area with potholes and glacial erratics. More than 200 potholes have been found there so far; more are discovered every year. The municipal Degernäs-Ramshöjden nature reserve features distinctive glacial formations and forest trails. The approximately 70 m high Ramshöjden hill is part of the Lokaåsen glacial deposit ridge.

Vargavidderna combines extensive wetlands, block-rich natural forests and the nutrient-poor Lake Gryten. There is an observation tower for birdwatching between the wetlands. The Djupa hålet kettle hole in Lidetorpsmon is 46 m deep and completely dry. The Lidetorpsmon nature reserve also includes an old forest with trees of different ages, as well as dead and decaying wood. A 2 km long marked trail runs around the large kettle hole.

Östra Sälsjömossen has a car park and an information board, but no marked trails. From the shore forest of the nature reserve, black grouse can be observed displaying in the wetland; in spring and early summer, the call of the cuckoo can be heard there. In Duvedalsängarna, a 1.2 km long walking path runs through an area known for its diverse animal and plant life. A level, accessible walking path runs along the shore around Lusthusudden. The rare red water lily grows in Gäddtjärn.

Trails

A marked 3.5 km long trail runs through the Jätteberget nature reserve. From the car park, a further 500 m long marked trail leads to Jätteberget, where there is a rest and barbecue area. In Rönningshyttan, the remains of a dam wall, a blast furnace ruin, slag heaps and stone lining along the stream have been preserved. A 1.6 km long walking loop runs along the furnace dam and the stream.

The railbike ride on the Trelänsbanan starts at Ängebäck station, 2 km from the centre of Degerfors. A suitable railbike route runs from Ängebäck to the Håkanbol rest area; the route is 7.5 km long and takes 2–3 hours there and back.

Culture and tradition

Åtorpsmarken is a traditional market that fills all of Åtorp on the last Saturday in September. Nysunds kyrka is a wooden church built in 1638. Sjötullen comprises a village shop, a café and a restaurant.

Water

The Karlskoga-Degerfors tourist fishing permit is valid for fishing in 45 lakes over a period of 10 days.
