Vuoggatjalme: Mountain Landscapes, Trails and Winter Experiences

Vuoggatjalme is located at the Arctic Circle in an unspoiled mountain landscape. Between mountain lakes, hiking trails and winter routes, you will find a wide range of ways to plan your trip. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first consider whether your main focus should be hiking, water, history or snow.

Hiking with routes of different lengths

In summer, several hiking trails lead through Vuoggatjalme. The marked trail through Sieldutvagge starts in the village and continues via Juoron to Mavas. A longer excursion is the Silvervägen/Guoledisjávrre–Guijaure–Vuoggatjålme hiking trail, which is 52 kilometres long. For trip planning with a clearly specified distance, the trail to Gujjávrtjårro is also interesting: The first 16 kilometres are clearly marked, after which an unmarked hike leads to the summit. This allows you to decide which route suits your planned stay based on its length and markings.

The Jurun–Vuoggatjålme hiking trail has a starting point in Vuoggatjålme. North of the village, an old mountain cabin stands along a marked hiking route. Vuoggatjålme also offers helicopter sightseeing flights as well as flights that drop guests off in the mountains so they can hike back. This allows you to experience the mountain landscape from another perspective.

Mountain Lakes, Boats and Winter Days

Boats can be rented at the Vuoggatjålme farm and at selected mountain lakes. Guoletisjaure is best reached by boat and is suitable for day trips focused on mountain landscapes and fishing. Ikkesjaure is also one of the fishing waters connected with Vuoggatjålme for day trips. The lakes around the village are home to Arctic char and trout and are suitable for ice fishing; this also includes the lake directly below the farm. East of Vuoggatjålme, Skidnakjaure has a good population of trout and Arctic char.

In winter, there are two groomed cross-country ski trails near the farm, measuring 2.5 and 4.4 kilometres respectively. A well-maintained network of routes also extends around Vuoggatjålme, allowing daily excursions by snowmobile and skis. The snowmobile rental service offers several models for deep-snow excursions and rides on marked trails. From Vuoggatjålme, snowmobile routes lead towards Tjidtjak/Gardaure, Tjådnejaureh, Tjärnberg, Arrajaure and up into Sildutdalen. Other routes pass beneath the Polcirkelbron to Nasaleden and onwards to Laisstugan, or follow the Sieldutjåkkå through Sieldutvagge to Mavasleden.

History and Local Traces

Around Guijaure, there are archaeological traces of old settlements, fireplaces, trapping pits and at least one older grave. Guijaure was also a historic meeting place for reindeer herders, hunters and fishermen and was connected with transports to the mine at Nasafjäll, whose operations began in 1635. Örnberget, north of Vuoggatjålme in Arjeplog Municipality, was designated a Fjällägenhet on 14 March 1935. Refugees also stayed in Vuoggatjålme for several days before continuing their journey in stages along Sädvajaure towards Sädvaluspen.

In the immediate vicinity of the destination, Guijaurestugan has a room for day visitors as well as two locked twin rooms. An information sign near Vuoggatjålme indicates that you have crossed the Arctic Circle. The rest area has an accessible dry toilet. For a break before or after an excursion, the Vuoggatjålme restaurant offers homemade food made with fresh ingredients from farms in Norrland.

Getting There and Choosing a Starting Point

A bus runs from Arjeplog to the Polcirkeln stop on Road 95, the Silvervägen. From there, Vuoggatjålme is 3 kilometres away. This connection can play just as much of a role in trip planning as the question of whether you primarily want to use your accommodation as a starting point for hikes, boat trips or winter routes. A protected area extends east of Vuoggatjålme towards Sielutdalen and complements the natural character of the village.
