Väckelsång combines the Åsnen landscape with a variety of cycling tours and a remarkable local history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a vacation filled with nature, activity and cultural discoveries, you will find several different travel ideas here: the Sydostleden runs directly through the village, Lake Åsnen is only 3 kilometres away, and there is plenty to discover around the church, local heritage museum and historic sites.

Åsnen and the bathing area as excursion destinations

Åsnen has a particularly strong influence on the surrounding area. The lake features an inland archipelago with 1,000 islands and a shoreline of more than 700 kilometres. Three kilometres from Väckelsång, this creates a diverse landscape for days by the water and excursions in the region. A few kilometres west of the village lies Ursjöbadet, a bathing area on Åsnen. Its facilities include a jetty, changing rooms, toilets, a playground, a barbecue area and parking. Families can therefore combine the excursion with different interests without having to limit the day to a single activity.

Cycling tours starting directly in Väckelsång

For active days on holiday, the location on the Sydostleden is an important point of reference. The cycle route runs directly through Väckelsång and is designated cycle route number 2 in Sweden. The section from Lidhem southwards is paved and allows for a comfortable and safe cycling trip to Tingsryd without competing car traffic. This makes it possible to plan a longer tour differently from a short loop in the immediate surroundings.

The Väckelsångsrundan mostly follows smaller paved roads. A short section runs along a cycle path closed to motor traffic. The ICA in Väckelsång is suggested as the starting point for this loop. Those who would also like to include some exercise without a cycling tour can visit the Väckelsång exercise trail at Björkvalla sports ground. Around the exercise trail, there is an activity loop with signs for various movement and training exercises.

Church, local heritage museum and local history

According to the finds made there, the settlement history of Väckelsång dates back at least to the Neolithic period. In the church, a gilded royal crown in the south-eastern gable commemorates the foundation stone laid by Crown Prince Oscar. The interior also reflects the local history: the altarpiece was painted in 1829 by Captain Salomon Andersson, and the dedication below identifies Crown Prince Oscar as the donor in 1829.

The history of the church site also includes the old church, which was demolished in 1828. An investigation of its remains uncovered the foundation walls in 1976. Another point of interest is Väckelsångs Hembygdsgård, a local heritage museum in a former inn a few hundred metres from Road 27. It contains an old school museum. The grounds also include an Iron Age burial site with 46 burial mounds.

More recent local industrial history also has its place in Väckelsång: the Arla cow was produced at the Lek i Trä factory in series of 5,000 units each. The factory associated with it was founded by three brothers. At Lidhem manor, the present main building was also erected in 1798.

Väckelsång as a base for your accommodation

When looking for accommodation, you can choose Väckelsång according to how you would like to spend your days. The Sydostleden, which runs directly through the village, makes it a good choice for focusing on cycling tours. Åsnen and Ursjöbadet add water and relaxation to the options, while the exercise trail, activity loop, church and local heritage museum offer further destinations for varied days. A holiday apartment in Väckelsång may therefore be particularly suitable if you would like to combine experiences in nature, exercise and history without committing to just one type of holiday.
