Markaryd combines landscapes shaped by the Ice Age, ancient natural forests and sites of cultural and historical interest with a variety of trails and activities on the water. The area includes hiking trails and pilgrimage routes, as well as historic buildings and opportunities for activities on the water.

Nature and landscape

At Hannabadsåsen, an ice-age terminal moraine ridge with a narrow crest and steep slopes shapes the terrain. The nature reserve has a 690-metre-long hiking trail marked in orange. It features beech forest as well as mixed forest with beech, oak, birch and spruce. By contrast, Rönnö Nature Reserve features largely untouched mires and ancient natural forest with trees that are around 200 years old. Two hiking trails in the area are 5 and 6 kilometres long, respectively.

Hiking trails and water

The 19.7-kilometre Markaryd–Traryd route on the Nydalaleden forms part of the S:t Birgittavägarna. It leads through forests and along waterways as a pilgrimage route. Nearby, the approximately 4-kilometre Bokelundsrundan runs east of Traryd through woodland and along forest paths. This loop includes a Bronze Age burial mound with a diameter of about 9 metres.

In Markaryd Municipality, nature-oriented activities include fishing and canoeing on lakes and waterways, as well as opportunities for walking and running on fitness trails and hiking paths. The municipality’s Upplevelsekartan contains maps and practical information about hiking trails, fishing spots, bathing areas, car parks, picnic areas, toilets and wind shelters. When canoeing on the Lagaleden river section, Smallland Canoes includes a cart for transporting the canoes over land passages in the price.

Culture and history

In Rönnö Nature Reserve, moss-covered stone walls and documented house foundations at “Lenas” are among the cultural and historical traces. In Markaryd, the sites used for cultural walks are marked with signs and QR codes; the history can then be read independently in text form.

Vetenskapshuset in Markaryd combines a Nobel Prize museum, a playful energy exhibition in the form of an escape room and an advanced chemistry laboratory. The building also offers interactive exhibitions and activities for young people and adults. Another historical connection is represented by the preserved railway line between Markaryd and Traryd, which is used for museum trains and railbike rides. The Malmö Folkbank building in Markaryd was completed in 1909.

Markaryd’s local heritage park features historic settings such as a Ryggåsstuga, a barn and a smithy. The Skvaltkvarn there is a water-powered mill with a water channel, a shaft for the regulating mechanism, a millstone and a flour bin. The Ryggåsstugan displays locally distinctive painted wall hangings as well as instruments such as Spel-Jonas’s old violin and Hälls-Johannes’ Magdeburgerspel.

Södergård in Markaryd comprises a yellow main building, a mill and the area known as “Ängen”. The Gästgiveriet inn once stood there before it burned down in 1864. Södergård was also the site of Sweden’s second post office.

Leisure and regional discoveries

Hannabadet has a play area and a water slide for younger visitors. Nearby, in Strömsnäsbruk, the Herrgårdstoppen factory shop carries the full range as well as seasonal products and offers tastings.

Getting there

Markaryd has its own railway station, served by Pågatåg trains between Hässleholm and Markaryd. Markaryd is also located on the E4; exit 49 is signposted towards Markaryd.
