Holiday apartments in Kalvsvik: Nature, Åsnen and cultural heritage

Kalvsvik is characterised by a landscape along Kalvsviksfjorden, where surrounding pastures, coniferous and deciduous forests, and wetlands meet. The landscape around the fjord is relatively flat. The agricultural landscape includes a continuous field structure on two low, gently sloping ridges: west of the built-up area near the lake and east of the built-up area. On the western shore of Kalvsviksfjorden are shore marshes and wetland areas. From Kalvsvik Church, there is a view across the agricultural landscape typical of the area; beyond it, the waters of Åsnen are visible.

Culture

Kalvsvik Church was built in 1851–1852 according to plans by Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander. It was built in the 1850s as a traditional Neoclassical parish church. The medieval church of Kalvsvik stood on the same site until 1855. The church has a ramp at the main entrance, an accessible toilet and a hearing loop. Kalvsvik is designated as a cultural environment of county-wide interest. This cultural environment illustrates the early development of a central parish settlement and the long-term development of the agricultural landscape.

The archaeological remains in Kalvsvik mainly include stone cists and stone burial mounds from the Stone and Bronze Ages. The local heritage farm includes a ridge-pole cottage, a soldier's cottage, a barn and a hay shed, as well as other buildings. Coffee is occasionally served in the coffee house at the local heritage farm. By prior arrangement, the Kalvsvik local heritage association can welcome groups for guided tours and coffee.

Hiking and history

The Kalvsvik hiking trail begins at the community centre, where parking is available. It passes through mixed forest, wetlands, pastureland and shore areas, as well as across the open waters of Åsnen. The trail offers nature and cultural experiences; information boards cover, among other things, birds, dragonflies, flowers, folk healers, ancient monuments and Nöjda-Sven's fishing spot.

A 500-metre detour from the Kalvsvik hiking trail leads to a restored Stone Age stone cist. Nöjda-Sven's cottage is a small dwelling with three stone walls and one wooden wall. The adventurer and tin worker Sven Nöjd lived there from the end of the 19th century until the early years of the 20th century. Following several renovations, Nöjda-Sven's cottage is a popular excursion destination. Varggropen can be reached via a footpath approximately 250 metres long.

Bathing area at Åsnen

Kalvsvik's bathing area on Åsnen has a sandy beach and a barbecue area. The site also includes a jetty, tables and benches, a children's swing, a changing room and a toilet. There is also a car park. The bathing area is signposted from Kalvsvik Church; it is located 1.5 kilometres to the south along a narrow asphalt road.

In the surrounding region, swimming at Kalvsvik beach can be combined with a visit to the part of Åsnen designated as a national park.
