Göteryd combines a nature reserve, Lake Römningen and a remarkable density of cultural and historical traces. Those planning a trip involving nature observation, walks, cycling and regional history will find a variety of ways to spend their days here. When looking for a holiday apartment in Göteryd, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus more on paths through the landscape, the water or historical discoveries.

Nature Reserve and Lake Römningen

Göteryd Nature Reserve borders the church village of Göteryd and extends northwards along a long shoreline to Lake Römningen. The lake is naturally nutrient-poor and has varied shores with several different habitat types. In the eastern part of the nature reserve lies the restored open meadow of Svensäng. It is kept open through grazing and mowing, showing how the landscape is shaped by different forms of management.

For spending time in nature, the reserve has a prepared trail with footbridges across wet areas. Signs provide information about nature, cultural values and the history of the area. This also makes the trail interesting for travellers who would like to combine their walk with small discoveries along the way. A marked cycling route of around 14 kilometres also runs around Lake Römningen. Along the route, signs point out features of natural and cultural history.

Cultural Trail, Church and Early History

The marked, 3-kilometre Germund Jonaes stig cultural trail begins east of Göteryds kyrka and leads through Göteryd Nature Reserve. Along the trail, information is provided about people and events from earlier times. The Germund-Jonaes Trail also passes Tullberg's grave. The grave lies at the far northeastern edge and is marked by a small cross bearing his name.

The history of the village also includes Göteryds kyrka. It was built by Tholander west of the old church between 1856 and 1858 and inaugurated in 1862 by Bishop Henrik Gustav Hultman. The cemetery also contains a large square monument, which is presumably a burial chapel. More than 80 documented stone-cist graves are found around Göteryd, making the area one of the most densely concentrated stone-cist grave regions in Sweden. In the area around Lake Römningen, these graves date from the Late Stone Age to the Early Bronze Age.

A Day at the Beach, Römningen runt and Regional Traditions

In the vicinity of Göteryd lies Ramnäs badplats. It has a sandy beach, a bathing jetty, a barbecue area and benches. The bathing area also has a gently sloping, child-friendly bottom and a toilet. For families, this can provide a different way to spend the day than taking a longer route through the nature reserve, without having to give up spending time by the water.

Along the Römningen runt route in Ekenäs are the remains of an old dam with an eel trap. Details like these add insight into earlier forms of land use to the landscape. Another point of interest is Slöjdskolan: in 1889, it was moved from Öckershult in Hinneryd to its present location in Göteryd, and it is now the clubhouse of Göteryds Hembygdsförening. The annual Göteryds marknad can attract up to 4,000 visitors.
