Målerås combines the impressive tradition of glass with experiences in nature. The village is one of six well-preserved glassworks environments in the municipality of Nybro, and its glassworks environment is considered to be of national cultural and historical interest. When planning a trip, the question is therefore not only which holiday apartment or holiday home is suitable, but also how much time you would like to set aside for glass, crafts, walks and cycle paths.

Glass art to see and take part in

In the exhibition hall of Målerås Glasbruk, you can view and buy art glass pieces in limited editions and one-of-a-kind works. This makes the visit interesting even if you are more interested in design, regional craft traditions or special souvenirs. The guided tour “Guided Tour with Glass House Show” offers another perspective on the history of glass. It begins in the gallery with a retrospective of the designer Mats Jonasson.

The work with the hot material becomes particularly vivid at the Open Glass House of Målerås Glasbruk. There, visitors can watch glowing glass being shaped into sculptures. Those who do not just want to watch can create their own crystal object at Målerås Glasbruk during a 30-minute glassblowing session led by a glass master. For families, this creates a travel memory that directly connects the manufacturing process with a personal experience.

Crafts and discoveries for different age groups

Outside the factory is the Children's Kingdom of Crystal. The glass-themed park includes a creative glass playground and a mini smelting house from a glassworks. This area offers a different way of engaging with the subject of glass, especially on a day of travel with children, than the exhibition or guided tour: here, discovery takes centre stage, while elsewhere the craftsmanship and the design of sculptures are made visible.

At the House of Crafts, seven artisans display their handicrafts under one roof next to the Crystal Shop. This allows you to complement your visit to Målerås with further impressions of craftsmanship. Tåget Målerås is located directly next to the facilities of Målerås Glasbruk and is part of the visit there. There are also four parking spaces directly outside Målerås Glasbruk.

Hiking and cycling around Målerås

The Framtidsleden hiking trail runs through Målerås. If you are looking for an additional hike in the surrounding area, Gråstensmon offers a trail of approximately 7 km that is considered moderately difficult. The approximate length and difficulty rating help you place this excursion differently in your daily itinerary from a short walk around the village.

Gråstensmon offers not just a trail but also distinctive landscape features: in the vicinity of Målerås, the area has a stagnation moraine as well as wetlands with large transition bogs, quaking bogs and interesting flora. Several cycle paths also start from Målerås. Depending on your preferred pace of travel, you can therefore focus your stay more on culture, physical activity or a mixture of both.

A shorter option for spending time outdoors is the 2 km circular trail around Lake Långegöl. It runs directly outside Målerås along Road 31. This means that, alongside the glass and craft experiences, a manageable walk by the water is also available for your trip planning.

Which accommodation location suits your trip?

If the glassblowing session, exhibition and House of Crafts are to be the focus, Målerås is a suitable centrepiece for your trip. If, on the other hand, you are planning longer days outdoors, Framtidsleden, Gråstensmon, the cycle paths and the circular trail around Långegöl may be decisive. When looking for accommodation, it is therefore worth first establishing your preferred daily rhythm: culture and demonstrations, shared activities with children, or hiking and cycling excursions lead to different ideas of the right holiday destination.
