Degerhamn combines an unusual industrial landscape with hiking trails, former quarries, lakes and impressive traces of the region’s history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for your trip, you can plan your stay around whether shared days outdoors, historical discoveries or a mixture of both should be the focus.

Hiking among alvar, quarries and industrial history

The Bergstigen trail is about 5 kilometres long and divided into three sections marked with red arrows. The trail leads into a slate quarry with abandoned rest shelters and dynamite stores. This creates a hiking experience in which the landscape remains closely connected to the area’s former use.

The Kalkbrottsleden hiking trail offers a different perspective. It crosses the Stora alvaret to limestone quarries, where various circular trails are available. For families or travel groups with different interests, it may be useful to include such trails in the day’s plans and choose between a longer hike and individual circular trails.

Degerhamn’s hiking landscape includes quarries and several factory ruins from 300 years of industrial history. In the Fältugnsområde of Degerhamns kalkbruk, 20 field kilns for burning limestone stand in a long row. Limestone and slate were once transported along the Kalkgata by rail from the quarries to the field kilns. The tall chimney marks the ruins of Öland’s alunbruk, which was founded in 1804.

Lakes, Birdlife and a Swimming Spot

The former extraction sites have also created diverse landscapes. Fågelsjön is a lake formed in an old slate quarry at Degerhamns kalkbruk. Stensjön was filled with water in the 1950s and is a former limestone quarry with abundant birdlife. From the viewpoint at Kalkbrottssjön, there is a broad view across the alvar and Cementa’s large disused limestone quarry, which is slowly filling with water.

At Adolfshamn, there is a swimming spot beside a beach of pebbles. This makes it possible to complement days of hiking and history in Degerhamn with time by the water. The variety of impressions makes it worth considering your preferred daily rhythm when looking for accommodation: Should the trip focus mainly on exploring trails and landscapes, are industrial history and museums the priority, or would you prefer a varied combination?
