Mullsjö: Wood Art, Nature and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Mullsjö
Mullsjö combines impressive natural surroundings with a remarkable cultural landscape. Among ancient forests, lakes, historic farms and Swedish wood art, you will find various ways to shape your trip. Depending on your preferred focus, Mullsjö can serve as a base for nature experiences, cultural discoveries, water activities or a winter sports holiday.
Discover Wood Art and Local History
A special cultural site is the Museet svenska trägubbar in the centre of Mullsjö. It displays the world’s largest collection of Swedish-carved wooden figures. The collection comprises around 1,300 objects created by approximately 250 carvers and artists. For your planning, it is also important to note that the museum is open on the first weekend of each month from April to October.
Margaretaparken is also located in the centre of Mullsjö. The park was laid out in the 1950s and is currently being carefully restored. Large rhododendron bushes, hundreds of plant species, ponds, rock gardens and paths define its character. Guided tours can be booked for Margaretaparken. This makes the park an interesting choice if you would like to combine your trip not only with independent walks but also with a guided discovery.
Mullsjö hembygdsgård adds historic everyday architecture to the cultural picture. The buildings date from the mid-19th century and served as a teacher’s residence. At the same time, the hembygdsgård is a well-preserved 19th-century farmstead on one of Mullsjö’s hills. Those interested in local history can choose a different way of exploring the town’s past here than at the museum.
Forests, Trails and Lakes Around Mullsjö
Several natural areas with diverse landscapes are located around Mullsjö. In the Ryfors Gammelskog Nature Reserve, pine and spruce trees grow; many trees are 150 to 200 years old, and some pines are more than 300 years old. The area is about three kilometres from Mullsjö and offers several marked trails on easily walkable paths.
The Stråkens strandskogar Nature Reserve is characterised by pine forest on sandy soil, several lakes and numerous paths. Nyckelås, in turn, is a large deciduous forest area with many rare species. There are two car parks and a marked trail that is approximately four kilometres long in total. These differences can help you choose the right day programme: Ryfors Gammelskog focuses on old trees and marked trails, while Nyckelås offers a different natural character with deciduous forest and biodiversity.
The nearby lake Stråken is 24 kilometres long and has several picnic areas and shelters along its shore. Canoeing and kayaking are possible on Stråken. The Tidan is also considered a canoe route; while paddling, you pass several bird sanctuaries. Depending on your travel group, you can therefore choose between a stay by the lake and a longer paddling route.
