Holiday apartment in Mullsjö: Discover forests, trails and culture

Mullsjö combines extensive forests, lakes and varied trails. Particularly characteristic are the Ryfors Gammelskog nature reserve, the unusually large deciduous forest area of Nyckelås, and the many routes through forest, moraine landscapes and open pine heaths. There are also historic sites, museums, winter sports, and opportunities for fishing, canoeing and cycling.

Nature

Spruce and pine trees grow in the Ryfors Gammelskog nature reserve. Many of the trees are 150 to 200 years old, and some pines are even more than 300 years old. The reserve has several marked trails, a car park, picnic areas, information boards and an accessible toilet. The blue trail is more accessible, but because of a cattle grid and some steeper inclines, it is not fully wheelchair accessible.

Nyckelås is an unusually large deciduous forest area for the region, with many rare species, springs and limestone-rich rocks. Trails lead down through the reserve to Lake Nässjön and the Tidan River. There are also two car parks and an approximately 4-kilometre marked trail through partly hilly terrain and narrow forest paths.

Hiking and landscape

The hiking trails showcase different aspects of the surrounding area. Mullsjö Runt is a 22-kilometre, easy-to-walk hiking route starting at the MSOK cabin. It passes through open pine heath, past sparkling lakes and streams, and runs through both flat and hilly terrain. The 9-kilometre Knipesjöleden also starts at the MSOK cabin. Its lakeside landscape is characterised by extensive spruce forest and elements of a cultivated landscape; the route follows forest paths and simple trails through flat and hilly terrain.

Stråkenleden is a 10-kilometre hike taking around three hours, marked in purple. It follows good forest tracks through an easy-to-walk, partly hilly moraine landscape. Södra Vätterleden is also part of the Smålandsleden trail system. The 5-kilometre Gyljeryd cultural heritage walk on Gyljerydsmon adds a historical and cultural dimension. It passes several important sites from the early history of the locality and impressive traces of the Ice Age.

Eriksgatuleden also combines landscape and history: the 7-kilometre hiking route follows sections of medieval riding trails and lies within Sweden’s largest continuous system of holloways, which forms part of the old Eriksgatuleden.

Culture and history

Ryfors is an old ironworks dating back to 1742. It has an active forge, a concert hall in the old flume building and a bowling alley that can now be used. Näs Herrgård is protected as a listed building, stands directly on Lake Nässjön and has one of Sweden’s two surviving 17th-century gatehouses.

At the Sägnernas hus folklore museum, visitors can learn about traditional beliefs concerning trolls, giants, forest spirits, water spirits and many other beings. Tavelhult Hembygdsmuseum has around 10,000 numbered and registered objects. It is an open museum where visitors are allowed to touch the objects.

Museet svenska trägubbar in Mullsjö houses the world’s largest collection of Swedish-carved wooden figures, with around 1,300 objects by approximately 250 carvers and artists. Today, it is the largest collection of its kind in Sweden. The museum is open on the first weekend of each month from April to October; outside these times, visits are possible by prior booking.

Water, winter and cycling

Stråken is an approximately 23-kilometre-long, relatively narrow and sheltered canoeing waterway. The landscape includes close contact with nature and wildlife, glacial sand ridges, pine forest, as well as several picnic areas and wind shelters. There is parking next to the bathing area at Mullsjö Camping. Canoes must be carried for a short distance, and a canoe trolley is recommended.

In Lake Mullsjön, you can fish for perch, pike, roach and tench. Fishing permits can be purchased and boats rented through Landhs Konditori. In winter, Mullsjö Skidcenter has 7 downhill runs, a ski shop, a ski school and a restaurant. The Mullsjö Ski and Orienteering Association, MSOK, also has a 4-kilometre artificial-snow cross-country ski trail illuminated until 10 p.m. When there is sufficient natural snow, a longer touring trail is added.

A 33-kilometre cycling route runs through the two localities of Mullsjö and Sandhem, passing forests, meadows and lakes.

Surroundings

In the immediate vicinity of Mullsjö are Nykyrka kyrka, Västergötland, and Nykyrka, both churches. Bjurbäcks Kyrka is a church in the area around Mullsjö. In the wider regional area is Tändsticksmuseet, a museum. The surrounding landscape also includes the hills of Hörnekärr and Domneberg. Ålleberg is a mountain in the wider regional area, while Idas park is a park in this wider regional area.
