Discover Höreda: Church Art, Cemetery and Trails
Accommodation in Höreda
Höreda combines a remarkable church landscape with forest and agricultural areas. The locality stretches along Torsjövägen, Road 894, and is completely surrounded by these landscape areas. This creates a varied picture for planning your trip: you can explore medieval architectural history, discover special details around the church and cemetery, or plan an approximately 11-kilometre exercise loop.
Höreda Church: Medieval Origins and Special Details
Höreda Church has medieval origins and is now designed as a cruciform church with a T-shaped floor plan. It is considered the oldest church in the Höreda-Hult parish area. At the same time, it is an example of medieval churches that had to be extended because of population growth in the mid-18th century. The tower was completed in 1833. The oldest parts of the church are probably the southern chancel and the two transept arms to the east and west.
Inside, medieval wooden sculptures have been preserved, including depictions of Saint Michael and Saint Barbara. There are also two valuable German chasubles from the 15th century. In the tower, you can also still see the former treadle mechanism that was once used to set the church bells swinging. Those interested in church art, architectural forms and historical craft details will find several different points of interest here rather than just a single building.
The church surroundings include a church stable from the 1870s, located by the road west of the church. A local heritage farm has also been established next to the church, with several log houses relocated there. These elements add to the view of local architectural and everyday history without requiring you to focus on just one subject.
Cemetery with Viewpoints and Historic Design
Höreda Cemetery also has medieval origins. It acquired its present size through an extension to the south in 1925. A dry-stacked stone wall and a belt of trees enclose the grounds; both reflect the design ideals of the early 20th century. For visitors who enjoy getting to know historic places through their surroundings and design, this area is a destination in its own right.
The cemetery also offers a panoramic view with eleven viewpoints marked on a map. This orientation can help you structure your visit deliberately and take in the perspective of the surroundings alongside the buildings. This creates a quieter, more contemplative part of the day in addition to the art-historical impressions in and around the church.
Active Things to Do Around Höreda
If you would like to include some exercise during your stay, you will find a sports facility with football pitches and exercise trails in the centre of Höreda. This can be combined with a cultural visit to suit different daily routines. A summer programme in 2026 also offered boules on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. As this offer specifically applied to summer 2026, you should not assume that it will be repeated during other travel periods.
Another option is the approximately 11-kilometre Torsjö–Höreda–Ryningsholm–Havravik–Torsjö loop. It is described as a relatively flat and fairly well-paved exercise loop for hikers, cyclists, roller skiers and inline skaters. Approximately 400 metres run along the heavily trafficked National Road 32. Take this specific section into account when planning your day and choose the loop to suit your preferred mode of transport.
