Discover Eksjö: Wooden Town, Lakes and Holiday Apartments

Eksjö combines a historic wooden town with museums, Eksjö kyrka and varied trails by the water and through the landscape. Eksjö museum offers guided tours of the wooden town and is located in Gamla stan along the Eksjöån river. Gamla stan comprises 48 listed buildings, giving the town experience a clearly recognisable historical setting.

Culture and history

Three permanent exhibitions at Eksjö museum cover Albert Engström, the history of Eksjö and the military history of Småland. The Albert Engström exhibition and the military museum have QR codes with recorded content in Swedish, English and German. The museum also offers educational programmes for all age groups. Aschanska gården is a preserved bourgeois home dating from around the turn of the 20th century and welcomes pre-booked groups throughout the year.

Eksjö kyrka is located at Stora Torget in Eksjö. The present church was built between 1887 and 1889 in the Neoclassical style, based on plans by the architect J F Åbom. Among other things, an altar and a pulpit from the late 17th century have been preserved from the previous church. Fornminnesgården is also located in Gamla stan in Eksjö; it is a local heritage museum housed in a 17th-century coppersmith's yard.

Flavours and town life

Smaka på historien is a tour through Gamla stan that combines the theme of flavour with narrated history. At selected stops, tastings related to the respective story are offered. The tour therefore focuses not only on the streets and buildings, but also on the connection between culinary impressions and the stories told at each stop.

Nature and trails

The Skedhult outdoor recreation area is located in Eksjö between Persö, Skedhult, Fiskaretorpsåsen, Borgmästarängen and Breviksvägen. Lake Gyesjön borders the area to the east, while Lake Norra Vixen borders it to the west. There are shelters and barbecue areas as well as a launch site for kayaks and canoes. The area also includes a hunting museum, buildings of cultural and historical interest and a mountain bike trail.

Skedhultsspåret is a 4.6-kilometre hiking trail marked with yellow posts and arrows. Geocaching is possible along the trail. Another type of trail is offered by Hälsans stig: The 5-kilometre circular route leads through Eksjö along illuminated cycle paths and footpaths. Each kilometre is marked with a kilometre sign, making it possible to keep track of the distance covered.

The walking route Gå längs Eksjöån can be followed without a map by simply following the river. Vattenledningsparken lies between the centre of Eksjö and Lake Hunsnäsen; Eksjö's old water tower stands in the middle of the park. This means that the town has a range of different routes: a riverside route, a park between the centre and the lake, and marked trails in the Skedhult outdoor recreation area.

Families and special events

Vildparken has a modern, accessible playground and an accessible toilet. The Cattus family tour is available in the free Tre Trästäder app, which can be downloaded from Google Play or the App Store. Recurring events include Eksjö vaktparad, a traditional annual parade that has been held for more than 20 years. Eksjö brandmuseum is open every year during the Eksjö Christmas market.
